Default Warning "Cheep" location.

I have a 1996 X330 and its battery keeps discharging. I have bought and installed a new battery, but the problem has not gone away! i read in the Jaguar Enthusiasts magazine that there is a cheep device that has its own small battery. After all its 29 years it is probably defunct but will keep demanding power to recharge it ! This discharges the main battery after some time. These are my symptoms! So my question is , Where is this piece of kit located and how do I get at it? AlecG.

By "cheep" you mean a security system sounder located near the right-side headlight? You can see its sticker easily looking under the plastic cover around the washer tank spout. If it said "intelligent sounder" than there is a backup battery there.

That is the one! I will dive under the car when the rain stops! Thank you. Do you know if there is a replacement battery? AlecG. I have checked it and yes it does show “Intelligent Sounder” I guess that it could be removed or disconnected to see if that solves the problem.

Looking on some info it is not intended to be serviceable as it is filled with the resin and despite it might be cut open to access the batteries it looks like the common fail on this device is a battery leak damage to the electronic board.

The device has a battery charger for the batteries of some rechargeable type inside potted with a resin compound

The batteries inside can't last forever and has eluded me to the relationship of your stated main car battery drain and its relationship to the SLCM in powering it as a backup , can it just simply be unplugged ?

The potting compound is very tough to remove from trying in the past

Default “Cheep”Sounder

I have now removed the unit and everything locks and unlocks as it should. The headlamps illuminate on pressing the key fob twice, so I hope the battery drain has gone. I have now opened up the unit and as predicted above, one battery was leaking. Unfortunately, the connecting tags between batteries and printed circuit board have separated at the board. I have ordered a new battery pack from Amazon. It is too big to fit in the old unit but I am certain it can be made to work. He says with unbounded optimism! AlecG.

Dunno if it's significant for you but if battery fix won't work you might just replace the intelligent with a passive sounder LNA2620BA. Lots of them available used.

Jaguar/Land Rover say that the AA version was replaced with the AB version but neither are available new. The concern I have with a used one is how long will it last before it too fails? When did the AB version come into service and when did it cease to be fitted? My AA version is 29 years old! AlecG.

Aside from the security sounder unit causing main car battery drain , you get into the area of termed parasitic main battery drain that has been experienced by many and there are solutions

On ignition key removal the ignition in / out linier switch makes between pin 4 and pin 5 ( car frame ground ) that starts a security system sequence of locking things up as you walk away from car

If items fail ( seats and steering column included ) to be seen by sensors / SLCM as you are exiting the car the SLCM will not " go to sleep " as a very low current draw on the main car battery , this sleep is on the level of around 40 milliamperes with trunk closed ( thanks Motorcarman ) so meter observations consideration

See how your solution works out and then maybe have to shift your observations to the car exiting car's behavior

Thanks for the info on current “leakage” I do have a few other issues. The main one is the steering column reach control, which is broken and I cannot remove one of the broken pieces. I guess this may have an effect on the shut down process? AlecG.

You can remove both steering and seat from having to move to the car exiting position by turning the large rotary switch on the cars left steering column from auto to off , this removes them from the " go to sleep " need to be at agreements

There are some solutions in that area if need be but for now it does isolate if an issue and no more dead battery

This turning off would have to be done before ignition switch key removal in the sequence of things

I do have the rotary switch turned off and the seat and steering wheel stay still. However, the driver’s door mirror still repositions.

As long as the seat and steering column wheel are not in the exiting the car sequence and not causing main car battery drain

Driver door mirror ...........as long as you don't observe battery drain

Observe no battery drain and we'll come back to being able to have the convenience of auto seat and steering on ignition key withdraw
