Default watch/clock inside the car

Hello all,
I Start this thread with a complain... how is possible that a luxury car like a xj6 X300 has a so cheap clock on the dash ? Looks same quality of FIAT clock inside eighties cars...
Anyway the clock is working but it's so dim that it's almost impossible to read it. Also during the night is not back lit as all the other instruments on the car. Here is the question: Is it possible to replace the Clock module if it is a independent module from the heater unit ?

BTW the clock on my Xj6 III is still working like a charm after 35 years... well hope it will continue like that

thank you

Rick

Clock is independent of the climate control unit and gets overheated by the incandescent bulbs desoldiering the glued on ribbon cable . Many threads on this but the least intrusive try is to shim the ribbon cable with a thick piece of paper or business card

Module Masters and other repair shops can get it working again if you choose to go that route.

It is backlit. If it isn't, your bulbs are burnt out.

There is a low heat LED bulb Mod to negate the ribbon damage depending on how far along yours is . Be careful in handling the ribbon connection . LED's come in green for better color matching . Don't throw away the original lamp covers / filters as you might try a white LED in a smaller size . 5 , 3 , 1.8 mm wide available . With LEDs polarity matters .

x300 clocks are fine, yours will be simply faulty.

Thats how it should look like

LEDs will never match the original colour, I must have tried at least 10 different types and its very difficult to get them right, best way is to get standard bulbs, they are called Grain of Wheat Bulbs, 4mm ones are needed and new ones are using 5 times less power than the original ones(~50ma) and they dont overheat the screen cable. Its possible to reuse plastic bases or just use ones from a standard neo wedge bulb.

By the way Sacer(manufacturer of original cables and screens) currently have a sale. If anyone needs a new screen or cable it might be worth checking with them

Thumbs up Send to Module Master for about $100

Yep, common problem we all have eventually with the X300 clock. It's a nice and appropriately matching clock when it is working and lit properly.

Time is money, and I'm adding my vote to Module Master. You can probably fix it yourself, but I'd suggest it's just worth sending to MM to get it done right the first time.

Great folks, about $100 to rebuild the clock, cable and add properly colored dimmable green LEDs, with a 5 year (as I recall) warranty.

Pic for reference as I've just received my LCD screens that I've ordered on Thursday. Excellent service from Sacer, can highly recommend them.

Look for ski sloop removal as I saw someone with pics and instructions . Be careful with the black plastic surrounds ears as they do break
