Default What are these worn out bushings?

Up at the very front of the car. The second picture is much closer. My car has been making a wrenching noise when I stop and I have a feeling it's because 70% of these rubber bushings are gone. If anyone had any information I'd be extremely grateful.

Lower wishbone front bushes.

There are 2 per side, 1 front, 1 rear.

I would do all 4.

NOT a fun job in any language.

Thanks Grant! How bad of a job is it? I'm hoping to be able to bang it out in an afternoon.

I have not done an X300, only the earlier "Series" cars, and they required the spring out.

I doubt these are any different.

You can replace the upper control arm bushes without removing the road springs, but to replace the lower bushes you must remove the spring. There are a couple of ways to do this safely. See this thread:

I made a spring compressor modeled after the Jaguar special tool, using a 20mm threaded rod 24 inches long (it could be a little shorter if necessary):

You may be able to remove the old bushes and install the new ones with the large-socket-and-long-bolt method, but I use a small inexpensive hydraulic press with suitably sized sockets or short sections of pipe as the rams and receiving cups. I don't have photos showing how the control arm bushes are swapped, but my photos of the front subframe pivot bush swap show how the press is used:

I found that the hardest part was removing the long bolts from the subframe to remove the rear part of the lower wishbone assembly. This requires removal of the stearing rack but in my case they were siezed in the subframe. I coudn't move mine and, ended up rebuilding the whole front end on a spare subframe that I had and fitting that. Yours might be fine depending on climate, but give yourself some time in case.
