Who would pay over $15,000 for an X300?
These people, on Bring a Trailer!
1996 XJ6 on Bring a Trailer
I didn't think it would pull half of that, but there was a bidding war. It is a low mileage, near perfect example, but still a base model with only 1 key fob!!

Bidding wars sometimes have a crazy ending. Emotions come into play.
However........
The subject car appears to truly be in mint condition, far better than the vast majority of X300s out there. If a person has his heart set on owning and driving a mint condition X300 (or any other car, really) it is cheaper, smarter, and easier to pay the money up front rather than take a merely "good condition" car and bring up to the same standard.
Just think what a premium quality repaint costs these days. You could $10,000 in the wink of an eye.
Cheers

One of my friends has a pristine '96 in the same color combination that he purchased a few years ago at just over 50K miles. He paid $4,000. And it is a Vanden Plas.
Obviously, at least two bidders really wanted one of the lowest-mileage, minty examples extant, and it appears the high bidder got one. An absolutely gorgeous car!
Now, anyone who wants to sell their X300 can point potential buyers to the $15,000 car to show what a great value theirs is at just $14,900.
Cheers,
Don

BaT is the king of down there measuring competitions, at some point it affects the market as a whole. The best recent example has been with the Range Rover Classic.

Around the same time this bidding war took place I picked up a 80k mile low rust truck for less than 3 grand and flipped it for almost 10. Today I could’ve easily got 20+ for it.
Now obviously the X300 isn’t as beautiful, charismatic or as nice to drive as a first gen Range Rover but it does show you how fast a totally worthless vehicle can appreciate. Time will tell

Near as I can tell there it was just two bidders who really pushed things over the top. At this point I'd view the $15k result as an anomaly; probably not easily repeatable.
Had there been a whole slew of bidders it would suggest that there is truly a demand for mint condition X300s and lots of people are willing to fork over the big bucks for one.

I agree it was an anomaly with only two bidders going at it. But a trend has started with the low mileage near perfect cars like this one, which BaT contributes to. Most XJ6 have been heavily used by now. It is rare to see one in such fine condition, according to the pictures. Too much for me though. Especially with no service history.
This car might have had that high dollar quality repaint, being black and being in Arizona. Notice, no coachlines.
All the same, if "Roundheadlights" shows up here we will welcome him. He will truly have a headstart over most new owners. Great user name too.
Bring a Trailer is ripening up for a low-mileage, pristine 1996 XJ12 offered by 1 of 19! Since they are super rare I think it would get a lot of attention on BaT. 20k???
