Default Zf 4HP 22 gearbox

Hi all .. I have a Jag ZF 4HP 22 Auto box.

My problem is the way Jag use to connect the G/box to the tailshaft, due to it having a split T/shaft (it doesn’t require any movement in the 1st part of the T/shaft)

Other gearbox extensions have a spline/oil seal that allows the T/shaft to slide into the gearbox for movement of the differential

Back to my problem, is there any way of converting the 4HP 22 so I can run a conventual tailshaft system.

Firstly WELCOME.

I see no reason why not.

Jaguar were NOT the only manufacturer to use this unit.

BMW, Merc, and maybe others used it, and I have NO idea how they did the connection bit.

Some investigation will sort it quite quickly. Talk to GOOD transmission shops, they will know.

Talk to ZF in OZ themselves, they should know.

Euoropean wrecking yards will have a smorgasboard of possibilities.

Jag have pretty much used that flange arrangement right thru, with the spline arrangement for movement actually IN the tailshaft itself.

The differential is mounted to the subframe. How much movement is it going to make?

Hi Rongle,

Welcome to the forum! In the Jaguar setup, the splined slip-joint is in the middle of the tailshaft/driveshaft/propshaft, where the shaft is supported by a center bearing. Here is the Jaguar X300 parts diagram:

The same setup is used in many other makes. For example, here's the parts diagram for a BMW:

If you intend to use the ZF gearbox in a custom application, wouldn't it be easier to fabricate a custom tailshaft using the forward half of the Jag shaft to mate with the transmission, and adapting it to the rear half of the shaft from the differential donor vehicle? A good driveshaft shop might be able to make those modifications and balance the finished shaft.

Can you tell us more about your project?

Cheers,

Don
