Default 1998 Jag Vanden Plas Won't Start!!!!

My 98 jaguar vanden plas had a little water in the tank as cap was lost and drain on top blocked. Rag over gas filler soaked and a little ran down the rag into the tank. I drained the tank through the rail. Fuel pump is working, and strong. When empty I put in a gal at a time, shook the trunk, and pumped it all out through rail three times, three single gallons, till empty. I put in new plugs but left cylinders open overnight. New NGK plugs gapped at .50 thous. Then put in another gallon easy and pumped out. Gas out of rail almost exact color as new gas in a clear glass. Put in 2 more fresh gallons. All water and anything else from years now out of fuel system. Put an ounce of gas in cylinders replaced plugs. Held pedal to floor turned key and won't start. A little, not big, pops from throttle body. Car ran a 100 feet before water hit so I know everything in engine is good. It just won't start again. At wits end. After pedal full down won't start, put pedal half down as usual way car starts and NOTHING!! What do I need to do. No money for help!!!

Sounds like bore wash. Putting fuel in the cylinders removes oil, resulting in low compression. Especially a problem with nikasil engines. Put a little oil in the cylinders, then try starting with pedal to the floor at first to shut off fuel, then ease pedal up. Expect a lot of smoke.
Be sure you allow engine to warm up before shutting off, or it happens again.

You can probably get by with just oiling one side.

Teaspoon full. You can crank it with the plugs out first to eject some of the oil... but beware it will spray..

Thank you for the help. The new unexpected problem is there is no spark to the plugs. I pulled #1 and checked by turning over engine. I checked the engine fuse box under the hood. All fuses are good. I am surprised as the car was running till the water hit engine. The gas is now immaculate and pumping well with pressure. The engine ran great till that point. I pumped the tank dry 3 times before getting quality gas out of the rail. Is there something that would shut the ignition system down if no fuel was getting into the system?

If not what process to check going backwards from the plugs Thank you. Michael

The actions so far are:

1. eliminated bore wash by putting oil in the cylinder bores
2. verified fuel is being delivered under pressure to the fuel rail.

You definitely checked the Engine Management Fuse Box (item B in the following diagram)?

Fuse #5 protects the Fuel Injectors and Fuse #18 protects the Ignition Coils.

3. found no spark at any of the plugs

It could be a faulty Throttle Body but you need to get a scantool on it and read the codes. Without pulling the codes, it's just guesswork.

Not that I would bet much on it, I would try the old "hard boot" before I tore into the ignition fault finding.

He's referring to a hard reset. Disconnect the negative battery cable and short it to the positive terminal using a large screwdriver or metal rod. Despite what some uninformed people think, this will not cause a short to ground, but it will discharge all the capacitors in the control modules and reset the modules.

obd2 reader is the correct way....

I believe a security system fault will do that if it does not read the
chip in the key.

I did a hard boot and still no spark from any plug. Where up the line do I investigate from the plugs

Possible faulty crank position sensor .... ?
As Lear45 says, buy a cheap OBD2 scanner and get some codes if you can.

I ordered one for about 20 bucks. Where is the connection for a 98 Vanden Plas and where do I find the code translations.

On my 98 sovereign the obd CAN connector is in the driver's (Right hand drive ) foot well, next to to the transmission tunnel, just below where the dash-board lower edge ends. I am guessing it will be in the same place on yours or in the 'other' (left hand drive?) foot well next to the transmission tunnel.

the obd 2 connection is under the dash by your right knee. German Auto Works in
Columbia SC does very good work and they take mercy on old Jags. It isn't always easy
finding a shop willing to touch them. I do most of my own maintenance, but when I don't have the time, tools or experience to do something they help me out.

I ordered an inexpensive OBDII. I've been doing some reading about the camshaft position sensor as the difficulty. To get a head start what is the code if this is the problem.
