1998 XJ8 Throttle Body parts
Could someone please help me identify the silver covered cylinder next to the air intake on the throttle body. It has a thin black wire or tube coming out of the top of it. I have looked on my JTIS and can't find what it is. The reason I ask is that it is buzzing loudly before start up whilst it is cold outside (and it is very cold out now) and I wonder if it has something to do with my engine firing briefly on start up and then dying. I have changed fuel pump rely and am trying to isolate problem areas.
I have used stethoscope to hear the buzzing and it is definitely from this cylinder on the throttle body once the ignition is turned to first position before trying to start it.
Thank you for your help,
Michigan.

That item is the Cruise Control Actuator on the '98 XJ8. A buzzing noise with key on and engine off is basically normal. That is not to say yours couldn't be louder than normal, but a perceptable buzz is usually heard from the throttle body with key on.
Cheers,
