1998 XJ8L: ABS, Traction, & Stabilty Control Lights On
I recently putchased a 1998 XJ8L that Im in the process of bringing back to road worthiness. The car is relly clean but needed a few things, mainly suspension related.
I have replaced all the front suspension bushings, sway bar ends, shocks, etc. I also did the rear shocks. This has made a huge difference and its now great to drive.
My Traction control and stability control lights are on however. ABS light is also on.
The guy you owned before me had a dirt driveway and everything had a pretty good amount of dust and mud but I have everything clean now.
Any direction you guys could point me in for diagnosing, testing, repaing this next project would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,
if trying to fix it on my own the first thing I would do is to get an ODB II code scanner. The fault code read from the car's fault memory provides more details on the problem. For example, which sensor might be faulty.

I just sent this to a XK8 owner, and I think it applies to your car also, from jagrepair.com.
You can check each wheel circuit at the connector, but I think you will find 1100- 1200 ohm, not 2000+. Disconnect the neg. battery cable before removing the connector.

RJ- You are correct. I recently had a problem and my ABS light was lit and the "traction control not available" message was on. My reading was 1134 for the left side sensor but way out of whack for the right side sensor. The problem on mine was the connection of the wiring harness where it plugs nto the sensor and after fixing the connection the reading was then 1131 ohms for the repaired sensor.
Note: the ABS light stayed on at start-up even thought the "traction control" message was now off. The ABS light went off after driving a short distance so be sure to drive the car after any trouble shooting to see if the problem is resolved.
That's good advice if he knows the abs module is faulty, but wasted money if it's a dirty sensor, bad connection to the harness or a broken harness wire.
