I have a 1998 Jaguar XJR that has been sitting outside for a year and a half in Norway. Due to a rear axle replacement, it was back then put into neutral by manually releasing the gear from Park. My console has also been disassembled to weld rust.
When I put it back into Park, there was some resistance. I started it, and there was resistance when moving it past neutral down to Drive. We're talking about very moderate resistance, but it didn't slide naturally. It slid naturally into fourth but won't go back to Drive, even when pressing the release.
The brake lights work normally, but the solenoid on the gear selector continuously receives 8.3 volts with or without the ignition/motor running.
I've tried Delphi Car 2017 and iCarSoft, but neither will read or clear anything other than emissions codes.
I have considered disassembling the gear selector to manually move it back so that the power to the solenoid normalizes, and then performing a reset with the battery terminal and key. But if that doesn't work, there might be a problem with some module.
So the question is if anyone has good ideas around this or experience with code readers that work on the 1998 model XJR specifically. Is there any procedures or diagrams for the Gear Break ETC?
M. Stojanovic, Thanks alot for the pdf`s !!! I am currently working with the wiring diagram and will spend the day troubleshooting. It's a bit tricky to find all the connectors, but I'll dedicate the day to this, along with a bottle of contact spray. I have 8.4 volts going to the solenoid, and the gear wire is stuck in "neutral". It might be as simple as a mechanical issue. It could also be related to the fact that the drive shaft was removed and moved without the engine running.
None of the code readers can properly read or clear codes. I get error messages both when reading and clearing codes, both automatically and manual scanning. Could there be an issue with the OBD port? Can someone explain how I can check/troubleshoot this?
Thanks for the electrical diagrams, they are invaluable!! Can I ask, Is there a PDF that shows the location of the connectors and a graphical overview of pin numbers and so on?
See the attached page on the Gearshift Interlock. I have also attached complete 1998 Electrical Guide, in 2 parts due to size.

On my 1999 Daimler Super V8 (AJ26 SC engine), I was able to read codes (except ABS) with old Actron CP9575. With Icarsoft i930, I could read ABS and some other codes. The two together covered many but still not all of the codes. If you are trying to read with fairly modern readers, they may not work on a "vintage" XJ. For complete coverage, you would need Jaguar IDS software (Version 118.5 is preferred), a VCM interface and cables. There is one set on Ebay at present (Jaguar VCM (VCM1) IDS Rotunda Ford Diagnostic Set | eBay) but it is rather expensive.
