1999 Jaguar won't crank
My friend left the switch on overnight in my Jaguar and the next morning the battery was dead. I put a new battery in it and it won't crank or turn over, but all my dash lights come on and "stability Control Fail" message comes on. What can be wrong? People have told me that I need to have the computer reset and also something about the alarm system needs to be reset. I have checked all the relays and fuses and they are all good. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Okay, I tried the hard reset where you take the negative cable and hold to the positive cable for 30 seconds, but nothing changed. It is still saying "stability control failure" on the dash. Everything is working inside, even the radio, but won't crank.
I am getting fire from the starter relay, but not from the switch to the relay. What could be causing this? I can turn the motor over from the starter relay, but it still won't crank from the switch or turn over. It's still saying "Stability Control Failure" what does that mean?
Hi hat,
Stability Control Fail usually lights up when your battery is low, I would try running a known good battery (I'm assuming your replacement is not) or trying to start whilst connected to a running car. That way you should have for sure 14V.
Stability Control Fail comes up first as a low battery indicator as this part is most sensitive to voltage drop. I would guess if you have someone else crank and measure across the battery it drops way below 12V when you crank.
If all else fails, review my never ending odyssey "gearbox fault, wrong part fitted" to learn everything you never wanted to know about starting a Jag.

Hi! I had similar messages. It could be low voltage in the battery. I replaced the wing mounted inertia switch, engine earth strap and the battery earth strap. They're cheap fixes to try.

Thank you all for your responses. I am going to try the battery again and see if anything changes. I am so frustrated with this car right now. Thanks again for everyone's help and suggestions.
Okay, we went and purchased a brand new jag battery today and it's fully charged (it cost almost $200). We put the battery in the car and it still won't crank or turn over. "Stability Control Fail" is still showing up. Everything else is working, the headlights, dash lights, interior lights, radio, door locks, antenna, everything electrical. I am puzzled! This car ran fine until my friend left the switch on overnight and killed the battery. We have tried the hard reset and my friend even went as far as sending off the computers to have them tested and they are all fine. We checked the relays and fuses and everything seems to be okay. My friend also took this car to some mechanics and they couldn't figure it out either. Surely somewhere, someone has had a similar problem. I am open to all and any suggestions at this point.
okay, after researching and researching and talking to mechanics and replacing the battery with a fully charged new battery, it seems that the problem is a bad key chip or a bad switch ring. Now, we are having a hard time trying to get a key made because we are trying to avoid having to go to a dealer. The locksmiths that I have talked to tell me that, that is the only way to get a key made.
Hi! I had similar problems with intermittent starting and strange messages on the dash board screen.
I put in a new earth cable on the battery and a new engine earth cable. The earth cables are a known issue with older Jaguars and the electronics don't function well. Equally, your battery will not be getting fully charged.
I also replaced the wing mounted inertia switch. I haven't has a problem since

Hmm...
seems like I have been experiencing a similar problem as my car, a 2000 xjr has power but won't start. I haven't made any progress understanding a reversing it, but will just resort to towing it in to have it diagnosed and let you know what they come up with.

Just try one of your other keys in the ignition lock/switch!!!!!(please don't tell us you only have one key)
You might have to have the keys re-configured to the KTM??????
The exciter ring might be faulty???
P1260 is the DTC for the car NOT recognizing the KEY.
I have seen cars that seem to 'FORGET' a key for no apparent reason??
Sometimes the immobilizer 'FORGETS' ALL the keys!!!!
The keys can be configured with PDU, WDS, IDS, etc. Find a shop with dealer level diagnostic equipment or tow the car to the Jaguar dealer and go on with your life.

I had this problem a year ago when I tried to use my backup key set which I never use: dead! Went and got the second key, started up; took both keys and the car to the local Indy to reprogram the keys. Now use one set in the AM, one in the PM.

My jag came with two keys, the valet key and the normal key. The valet key will fit in the switch, but won't turn the switch. i don't think it is the right key for this car. What gets me is that my friend drove this car every day and it ran like new until he accidentally left the key in the switch with the switch on over night. He spent tons of money on this car taking it to mechanics and having things tested. I think we are done with it and are just going to take it to the crusher!
Finally!!! After a new battery, all electrical tested, paid mechanics(who didn't help at all) we called a locksmith that came to our home and cut us 2 new keys and programmed them and it cranked right up!! Runs as good as it ever did. Apparently when our friend left the switch on over night, it not only killed the battery, but burnt up something inside the key. I am so glad to have this thing running again after about 4 months! Thanks everyone for your advice and help.
