Default 1999 XJ8 - Dash Clock Noise

Hi All

Do the dash/center vent clock for other owners out there make noise when the minute hands are turning?

Recently acquired a second 99 XJ8 and noticed it also makes the same plastic/springy noise when the hands move as my other car. Jaguar went through a few iterations of part numbers and different face styles from 98-03, so I was wondering if the newer part numbers are quieter and worth replacing. I always thought it was a rattle in the car and never realized it was the clock making this noise!

Thanks for any info!

Mine too.
And it was a pleasure to hear after working a day fighting all squeaks and rattles in door panels and dash.
Reminds me to the RR advertising, and no urge to ex-change.

I think it is pretty cool that I can hear it move going down the road at 50 MPH.

I just went out to the garage and sit there watched my clock for about three minutes. I heard absolutely nothing. No click, tic or rattle. Maybe the 2000 models they changed the clock motors. It must be really loud to bother someone.

Mine's quiet too. Guess they wised up after the 98 model year or decided to let RR have their marketing claim to fame.

Thank you all, for your investigative work

Seems from your reports that the internal mechanics were changed along with the face/dial redesign in 2000. With the 99 you can really hear the plastic dial movement if you adjust the time using the + or - keys.

Might have to test out the newer clock design next time I have the dash open to change some light bulbs.

It is a funny that a forum can actually have someone going down to the garage and listen to his car-clock just because someone asks about it .... I love this place!

I listened today, I can actually hear mine at 60 MPH. That's not how loud the clock is that's how quiet the cabin is.

Don't blame the 98s, both of mine are silent.

My 99 XJ8L's clock is quiet, with only a mild sound when resetting after I reconnect the battery or daylight savings time change.

Ran across technical bulletin 910-10 (Squeaks & Rattles Diagnostics) and they actually mention the clock buzz and to replace it due to tolerance stack-up issue.
