2001 XJ8 Alternator Removal
Last night, I was following the JTIS alternator removal process, and everything was going peachy. Until I ran into removing the stupid multi-plug from the back of the alternator. HOW DO I PULL THIS THING?!?
I'm sure it's something super easy that I wasn't seeing, but no matter how much I pinched, pulled, jimmied, shimmied, jiggered, flabbered, and cursed, it wouldn't budge. It was getting late and I was getting tired, so I gave up. I'm hoping for some good advice here that I can take home and finish the removal with ease. I'm ready to feel dumb. Thanks in advance!

I had a hard time with it too, until I finally pressed the right thing. It has a small clasp, kinda like on most of the electrical connectors on the car. Don't remember exactly where on the connector is is, but it's there... Have you tried a little mirror to get a better look at it. Or a small digital camera... Also, when I changed the alternator on my 99 VDP, I went in through the wheel well, taking the wheel shroud off. Pretty quick and easy.

The clip to release it is on the engine side (naturally) of the plug. Press it towards you to release.
I had to wrastle the alternator to get it off. The mounting bolt presses on a metal bushing to secure the unit to the mounting bracket.. You will need a long bolt, washers and nut to press out the bushing once the alternator is out otherwise it will be difficult to reinstall.
It's in the JTIS.

P.S. While you're there you may want to change the alternator brushes. Ay 140k mi mine needed changing due to corrosion on the terminals and brush wear.

Hi all,
I`m having a nightmare removing the alternator on my 99 XJR, been on it 5 hours so far (2 & 1/2 hours to remove the top mounting bolt as it was welded to the aluminium bracket, ripping out some of the thread in the process), I have now discovered that it doesnt seem to physically come out of the car...
Could someone point me in the right direction of this JTIS alternator removal process please?
Thanks.

Just came across your post today as I was searching the best way to remove my alternator from my 2001 Jaguar XJ8. I have everything unplugged and removed and the alternator is free floating but I cannot find a way to actually remove it from the vehicle. I see a sway bar I am tempted to remove hoping it will give me enough room to remove the alternator, but it still looks like if I remove it, it will still not be enough room. Do you have any tips or advice on how to remove it?
Thanks!

Just had the alternator go out on my 2003 VDP. It is less than 2 years old and was installed by a shop in Austin, TX as it died there while on vacation. When going to pull / replace today, i discovered the upper bolt head was broken off by the previous mechanic. I called and had a stern talking with the shop's Saturday advisor. Looks like I'm pretty much on my own. Any suggestions as to removing the broken bolt??? Does the mounting bracket actually come off as well?

The aluminum mount bracket is bolted to the block BUT the fasteners are BEHIND the alt so it needs to be removed in order to get to the mount bracket fasteners!!!!!
You MIGHT be able to drive the bolt out the REAR of the mount ear (it is a steel threaded press fit piece) but I think the engine mount will interfere.
