Default 2001 XJ8 VDP touble messages and no start in park.

Hello all,

let me start by saying I am a newbie. I searched the following key works only to strike out. ( I assume being new I do not know the proper terms or key words. )
I have a 2001 XJ8 VDP with 164,000 miles. It says that the ASC and track are not available and that its in fail safe mode? Car runs and drives fine worried about driving though as the fail safe thing makes me think I will be stranded. Where do I start looking?
Also will only start in neutral not park. It cranks in park but will not start.

If I am in the wrong area or totally missed something I apologize. Thanks in advance!!

Do a search on repairing the ABS module. Don't know your mechanical skills but it involves re soldering the 2 pins on the module.

Thanks, does any know why it won't start in park or about the fail safe message?

I'm far from sure, but I think the two problems are not related. The TRAC not available may well be a poor solder connection in the ABS unit, and the not starting in park may well be a switch adjustment in the J-Gate.

I think the first thing you need to do is check for codes with an OBD II reader.

Or a faulty brake switch.

+1 on the codes though, a cheap ELM327 and a smartphone app will initially do the job.
Read the codes before, write them down, and again after you do a HARD RESET of the battery and a ride.

I had the fail safe and traction not available issue a couple of month ago. Turned out cleaning the throttle body did the trick. Easy DIY job. Plenty of videos on how to on youtube.
Also had a cooling problem which turned out to be a broken thermostat but cant remember if that related to the fail safe issue too.
I used the momentum to give my XJR 2002 a "full service" which doesnt cost much but will make your jag happy. Plus it will get you acquainted with your car
I did:
- throttle body cleaning
- new spark plugs (found out I need to replace the cam voer gaskets)
- air & fuel filter
- oil & oil filter change
- transmission oil & filter change (working on it)
- coolant flush
- differential oil change (dont forget to clean the breather! and grease the U joints while you are there)
So far all pretty easy to do DIY and pretty low cost. Didnt (had to) change lamba sensors and ignition coils, but you may need/want to.

Good luck!

I'm guessing that is just a typo and Gasworks meant he had to replace the "cam cover gaskets".
