2002 Jaguar XJ8 Shifter issue
Yes, I am the idiot to attempt this job. Agreed. With that out of the way, here is the problem:
- My shifter bezel was cracked, like someone had dropped something on it. Very unsightly. But I had zero codes or issues, car has run well for at least 10K miles that I have owned it.
- Sourced a new shifter assembly off ebay.
- Attempted to replaced it. Cables very difficult to get to, especially the white one, but after much struggle and with the radio out, I had enough room to swap the cables, and went to test without full reassembly.
- Now I get a gearbox fault code and failsafe mode codes. Yay.
You are right, I should stick with old chevy trucks, no disagreement. I am an idiot. Here are my theories though:
1) The part is not swappable with a slightly different part number/fru, as shown in the pics.
2) The new (used) part has a bad connection to the circuit board or bad circuit board, as shown in the pics the connector to the board looks a bit bent and not as solid as the old part.
3) I did something wrong during reassembly.
4) I need to reset the cars ECU somehow to accept the new part?
I have not tried to go back to the old part yet since again that white cable is a major PITA to access, but I will if noone has a better idea?
Note in the pics below the green striped part number is the new (used) and the yellow striped is the original from my car. Note also the comparison between the new part and old part connector to the circuit board, the new one looks a bit bent and stetched.
Thanks ahead.

Reopening old wounds
So I got another shifter off ebay and it works great. Almost done, but I cannot seem to get the console back together right. The fit is off on the base.
Please have a look at these pics and let me know if you have ever experienced this, where you put one back together and esp the buttons just dont seem to go on right?
You can see the wood trim piece is flush around the radio but then bows out... ideas?

good day and sorry to hear about that J gate issue and I had years ago.
I ended up getting 3 shifters and tested.
I was told although they all look virtually the same but they may NOT be interchangeable through out 4 ,5 production years of X308. you need the shifter from the same production year.
stupid jaguar for all those crazy things, it drove me nuts.

Don't know about being stupid manufacturer. Small production car maker do change things in mid production. Same as do big manufacturers. I do appreciate manufacturer more who makes their product better fast. This makes things more difficult to decipher after 20years than it were back in the day.
