Need some help on installing a new water pump.The new WPcomes with a gasket and o-ring, but I am trying to determine where the o-ring actually goes. The old WP had the o-ring around the lip, but it has a groove for it. Does the new o-ring go at the end of the lip instead around the lip like the original?

The newest style pump as updated a few years ago uses a flat steel gasket at the mounting face, period. I don't know what you bought, but it doesn't sound like that's what you got.

 

The one that I took off has the flat steel plate, and an O-ring around the center opening that protrudes into the engine about 1/2 inch. This is an aftermarket water pump that does come with a gasket but no groove for the o-ring.

I am literally sitting here with a new AJ8 8912 pump in my hand, there is a flat steel gasket for the mounting face and no rubber O ring of any sort used for its sealing or installation. The aluminum gasket with bonded O ring is obsolete. What you have in your hands is what you got, and if it differs from mine it is not the latest style Jaguar factory water pump.
