Default 2002 XJR fault code reader and light reset

I have a 2002 XJR supercharged model and have a re-occurring engine management light coming on. Occasionally the car falls into restricted performance mode and will not rev past 3000 rpm. This usually goes on its own after a few minutes or when I switch off the engine and wait a while. I've had the car into my local Jag specialist and they always say that there is no fault and reset the warning light off. It's usually OK for a while but then returns.

I want to buy a cheap OBD2 diagnostic unit that enables me to plug in and read the error codes and reset the dash but I don't want to spend thousands/hundreds of pounds. There seems to be units available for £20 and others cost 10 or even 100 times as much.

Any recommendations for the cost I should be considering or specific brands and models of units that are compatible with Jaguars of this model?

I'm in the UK if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance.

Almost anything should read the code your useless specialist says isn't there. Have a look at posts on the forum for known good tools.
