Default 98 VDP Wiper Issue

I am having a grand time figuring this one out so I hope someone on here can point me in the right direction.

My wipers just stopped working. I have tried switching the relays, checked the fuses and grounds. I finally decided to pull the motor out and when the unit is uninstalled and laying in the engine bay it functions properly. When I re-install it, nothing. HELP. I do not want to buy a new motor if it is something else.

Also it seems as though I look up the motor for a 98 VDP and it does not match what is installed. I looked it up by part number, LMD7001BA assembly and Trico 540-03 motor, and they come up as 94-97 XJ12. Did someone install the wrong parts at one time or was this the factory install? Could this be my issue?

Do a Google search; another had the same issue about a year ago.

In the meantime, get new relays; check the ground; look for an internal grounding in the motor which only shows when it is tightened down or has the wiper arm installed.

Are you sure the wiper arm is sufficiently tightened down: I had this problem on my RRSC a few years back; motor was turning, but shaft was spinning inside the arm.

Thanks Jim.

I am not familiar with the torque specs for the wiper arm. I did buy a new arm but maybe I didn't have it tight enough.

Also how would I go about checking for the motor ground once it is installed? The motor is concealed inside the cover with the transmission?

Oh boy!

Brevity isn't my strong suit when I'm frustrated as you can see. I feel your pain, bud. Do yourself a favor and don't re-install it again. Once you get it out, leave it out. Find a bargain on Ebay for a used 4-pin model, with the motor on the OUTSIDE of the cover, ditch the 4 to 5-pin electrical adapter, and plug'n'play your new purchase. It'll slip right in. It'll even work smoother and quieter than that misfitted contraption you got your hands on there.

Let us know how it turns out. Misery loves company!

As I read your post KP I had flash backs. This is the 3rd time removing the assembly and this time I decided that I was not putting it back in. I ordered a replacement unit with the blue plug a few days ago in my own attempt to solve the issue. I am glad that it was a good choice on my part as it will be here soon.

Thank you for documenting the struggle as it details it all too well.

Ok so I was working on installing the new motor assembly tonight, got it all installed and cannot figure out the wiring. I opened the old motor to see where each of the current wires go but cannot do the same on the new motor. Any help on what wires go to each other on the new motor?

Also I did some more testing on the old assembly and found the issue I am having is at the connection between the motor and the transmission, there isn't any locking mechanism between the two besides a set screw. Is there supposed to be something different to lock them together?

I'm a little perplexed with the problem as you're describing it. It certainly sounded like you are dealing with the same motor assembly I had - yellow plug, 5-pin. On mine, there was also an adapter that took the 4-pin plug and adapted it to the 5-pin plug on the badly fitting, problem motor. All I had to do was remove this adapter between the car's native harness connection and the replacement motor. The pics I posted in the link I attached above show this... they aren't the best pics, but they do show what I had to deal with. Take a look at those pics again, and make sure we're on the same page. You should probably also post a few pics of what you're dealing with. Let's make sure we're talking apples=apples.

I had to do nothing but unplug this adapter in between the car's wiring and the motor. The car's plug then plugs perfectly into the replacement motor's 4-pin blue plug.

Post some pics so I can make sure I'm not talking out of the wrong end.

I am sure we are talking about the same assembly 100% by your pics. I will post some while working on it tonight.

I will look again, a little closer this time, but I do not recall seeing a secondary plug coming from the wiring harness just the Yellow 5 pin.

David,

We can narrow this down if you just go to ebay and search for
LNC3125CA

there's one for sale currently - probably not going anywhere soon, or *ever.*

That's the plug adapter I had on mine, and I'm assuming you have as well.

Ok so I have finally had time to install the newer motor that I purchased. I removed the "adapter" plug so that the motor I got plugged in as suggested by KP. At the same time I replaced the both of the relays and now I have a new problem.

I went from not having any movement in my wipers to one speed, high, and they stay on for about 30 to 45 seconds after I turn the switch off and the ignition for that matter.

I have tried swapping the relays with the same result. Could it be the motor that I got? Is there another relay or fuse I need to change?

All help is very much appreciated.

This was a plug-n-play swap out for me after removing the 4 to 5 pin adapter. My used replacement motor works in 2 speeds and shuts off properly, though, I do recall having to adjust it's "park" point once or twice... moving the wiper arm a few teeth over on the motor shaft so it would park in the correct spot.

That doesn't sound like your issue though. Have you tried a hard reset? I would try that before I dug in any deeper... hard resets can do wonders for things like this.

Does your VDP have auto rain sensing? If so, maybe that has something to do with the behavior your seeing... dunno. Maybe someone else here on the forum can help diagnose auto rain sensing issues if that's the case.

Keep us informed.
