Default 98 xjr in accessory mode even with key out

Hi i am defintiely a newbie, i just purchsed this 98 xjr from an auction 2 days ago, today i started to fool around with it. The car didn't have a battery so i started there and got a new one, but right away i noticed something odd. Without the key the instrument cluster lit up like it was in accessory position and the windows, signals, etc. Worked without the key at all, when i put the key in and truned it forward it does not crank at all, no fuel pump sound, just clicking, but with the key forward the radio and heat controls work. I am already really confused. I would appreciate any help or ideas!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jaguar and to the Jaguar Forums!

I can understand how the styling and potential of the XJR could cause you to seize a great deal but now you need to educate yourself.

First, I would suggest you read through the links here:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=29800

Next, I would suggest that you down load the complete Jaguar manual from this site:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=9933

That contains all the OBDII codes, diagnostic charts and the electrical schematics.

Now, to you current problem; first check all the fuses in all the fuse panels. Next thing that comes to mind is the ignition switch/wiring or the ECM power or connections. There is a single relay powering the ECM in the 'firewall extension' on the right side. It is the sorta stand alone brown relay. Pull it, check the little schematic on the side and verify that 1.) the ignition switch powers the relay winding and 2.) there is ECM power to the relay.

Swap the relay with one of the others. Almost all the relays are the same.

Let us know the results and we will guess some more.

Yes, almost sounds to me like it may have been a theft recovery and someone tried to jimmy the ignition. Then, someone else tried to put it back, unsuccessfully...

You have bigger ***** than me to buy a 12 year old XJR and not even see it run before you buy it. Good luck figuring out your situation!
