Default Airbag light issue

2003 XJ8...My airbag light popped on about three weeks ago. Then I realized my airbag/cover on the steering wheel was loose, so I tightened it up, no light!
now over the last couple of weeks, the light is going on and off intermittently. It will pop on while driving, then after I stop and restart the car, it’s off. Sometimes it stays off for a couple of days, but then reappears again. The airbag cover is still tight.
Should I remove it and make sure nothing is lose, or is this a sign of something about to permanently go wrong?
many thanks in advance!

Since the air bag was found to be loose the connector may also be loose and not making good contact. First you need to disconnect the battery and then wiat at least an hour and then remove the air bag and check and clean the connections. Anything less than an hour and stored energy can ignote the aor bag.

I think thats a good place to start. FIRST.... disconnect the battery completely and wait at least 20 minutes before you do anything. Then loosen the two screws and remove the bag. It will only come out a few inches as the wire is short. You can then check the plugs and also the wires. I just had an airbag light on and had to replace the clock spring. That fixed it. Easy job but remember to WAIT after you disconnect the battery.
Hope this helps

As for that clock spring, how would I test that, or is it hit or miss?

I really don't know how to test the clock spring. I had heard that it can be an issue so I bought a used one and put it in. That solved all the problems. Just be carefull when you replace it. Inside the enclosure, it's a coil of ribbon wire. It has everthing to do with anything on the steering wheel. That includes, airbag, volume, horn, etc. When I took the old one out, I found it had a break in it. Then I could test it and found the break was the problem.

Well, I removed the airbag and sprayed the electrical connections down, replaced it, and it seems fine now. I think it came on once right after I did all that, but nothing since, except the normal start up.
thank you!

Your very welcome. The coil inside my wheel was all doubled over and broke so I had to replace it. I bought one from ebay for $40 and it worked fine. I think you got lucky in spraying it down. I think a better way to connect the wheel functions could have been devised... I'm sure I'll drive this car till the wheels fall off. I had been collecting Corvettes and only bought this Jag for a winter car.... Now I've got to buy a different winter car, won't use this one.
