Default Automatic Seat Failure?

Morning guys,

Quick question for you this morning. Again, I'm going to plead ignorance on this one. I believe my automatic seats have stopped working. You know how when you take the key out of the ignition (or open the door, I forget what triggers it exactly), the seat slides back for easy exit, and then when you put the key back into the ignition, it slides forward again in your Memory 1 setting? This feature seems to have stopped working and all seat adjustments have become manual.

Is there a way that I could've accidentally turned this off, or has something likely fried? Still trying to figure out the various nuances of this car.

Thanks much, and hope to hear from you soon,

Dave

Trying to remember a few years back to my XJ8L .............. doesn't this feature only work in combination with the steering tilt & reach set to Auto?

Try turning the knob that adjusts the steering wheel position. Although it might not look like it can turn clockwise/counterclockwise, it actually can. This enables/disables the auto feature.

I'm lucky that my legs are long. My seat stays all the way to the back at all times, and the only thing that ever moves is the steering wheel.
You should consult the owners manual to reset all the functions. If you don't have it, it's available on line.

Mine does this also, seat stops on the same position, steering wheel moves to allow ease of access, how do I get the seat to help as well?

On my XJ8 Soverign, the seat only goes back half way or so on the automatic bit when I take the key ut, I can manually make the seat go back to the end of the travel but then it won't come forward on the auto when I put the key in, bt it will if I press the button on the door - or obviously manually. I've put it down to one of those things.

Mine does the same thing. The steering wheel moves but the seat stays put. I read in another post that someone suggested a burnt fuse in one of back seat panels. I checked mine and they are all good so it didnt work for me, but might work for you. I believe it is one of the 20amp fuses.

Any idea of which panel and fuse number?

I believe it was the left side under the back seat because that's the one I checked first. Nothing was burned out so I then checked the right side. Nothing there either so I checked owners manual. I believe the right side did have something in it for the seats. I can check the owners manual tonight when I get home and repost on here. I know it was a 20 amp fuse though. There are only a handful in either side though so not to hr to check

L800US,

The manual shows several seat control fuses. here they are as my manual has them listed:

Right hand heelboard
Fuse #1 left hand seat control module
Fuse #9 Passenger seat switchpack

Left hand heelboard
Fuse #1 Right hand seat control module

Good Luck. Like I said earlier mine were all good and my seat still will not move back when I shut off the car. Hope you have better luck.

When the seat position potentiometers fail you will not have all the memory features available. I have uploaded TSBs for diagnosing and repairing the seat sensors. Look in the large file section for the info.

I would suggest turning the knob to OFF and go on with your life as the sensors are about $200 each and there are 5 total for the driver's seat (plus 4 or 5 hours labor for install and calibration with WDS/IDS/PDU).

When I worked at the dealer we repaired the seats in warranty all the time. When the car was out of factory warranty and the customer was given a repair estimate of $1500.00 for the sensors, most declined the repair and put the switch in manual mode.
