Automatic Wiper blades

Last week while enjoying 16 inches of snow, I inadvertently got into my '02 XJR before cleaning of the windshield of snow and turned the car on to warm up the heating. The automatic winshield wiper feature was ON and theweight of the snow appears to have stripped the threads / gears.
Now the motor does work, but the arm does not move and is very loose.
Firstly, How do you get the arm off?
Secondly, if the answer to one is easy, is this something that I should tackle myself?

try tightening the nut under the wiper arm cover 1st

Brutal,
Thank you. It has been snowing everytime I have looked at the arm. This is the only reason that I can think off for not noticing that there is a nut under there. Thank you
