Default Can't unscrew coolant cap

I have looked everywhere for help with coolant cap. All normal issues tend to be that the cap unscrews but needs pried off. I have tried using a rubber gripper, pushing down, and can't get it to loosen up/it won't turn. Any advise would be appreciated.

what cap are you referring too? The one on the reservoir tank is the one you should be messing with unless you have some specific reason to undo the one on the thermostat tower.

Photo of the Coolant Expansion Tank

I had to use a pair of pliers a couple of times in the past few years to unscrew the cap.

Not sure of what type, but was probably the larger sized channel lock pliers.

If you use Channelocks...be gentle.

I have those in the trunk, since sometimes the cap just do not open with other tools.

I use the same tool but always put a piece of paper towel to cover the cap so I will not scratch it.

I think you are not trying to unscrew it when it is hot right?

I have a suggestion : let it cool down, then pour hot water over the cap. The goal here is to heat the cap, but not the reservoir. This might loosen it up, due to the differential expansion.

Rough situation when unit is overheating or leaking.

I usually rub vaseline or di-electric gel on the gasket to prevent this problem.

The cap does not seal like the old radiator caps. It does not rely on being TIGHT. It seals with 'O' rings in a cylindrical passage into the tank.

Tightening the CRAP out of it will not make it seal better, only makes it harder to remove!!!!!!!

As long as the cap does not come loose with vibration it will seal if it is just SNUG.
