Default Check Rear Lights message XJ8 2001

Dear Jag People,

Yesterday my message center gave me Check Rear Light message, I thought easy to replace bulb, but when I checked them out ALL LIGHTS ARE WORKING, including high mount center brake, brakes, reverse and turn-signal.

Any one have a clue as to what is happening?

Thanks

JP

Check the third brake light, I had just one bulb go bad, it cam on only when going over a bump sometimes, and could not see that it was out, 5 bulbs there, also check the brake lamps, does the message only come on when you hit the brake? put a bit of electric grease in the socket, that fixed mine.

My experience was that only the lower brake lamps set that warning not High mount.always was the brake lamp filament that was out, not the running lights. But you could also have frayed wires.

Interesting - had the same happen to my 2001 recently. The message came up while breaking at a stop light, then disappeared and no new occurrence. All lights working. I have removed my third braking like sometime ago (the unit broke like brittle - and apparently not an issue with TX inspection not to have the 3rd brake light). So I will be monitoring this thread just in case.

Cheers

It is brittle: epoxied the light unit back together to hold the bulb set, then epoxied the window mounts to the window; fun job epoxying six pieces. then got one of the members to find the outer cover at a junk yard for me; it broke too. More epoxy. Regular abortion, but it works, wrapped in white vinyl tape.

The plastic trim in these things are atrocious -- bad chemistry.

I would be willing to bet that one of the brake filaments is on its last legs in the main brake lights. replace them before the inspection.

You may closely check one of those rear lights with a double-filament set-up. In my case, I got the message simply because one of the two filaments was blown but the other (the ok filament) was coming on. Fortunately, I still have some original Jaguar spare bulbs. I simply swapped it out the whole bulb. I had to use a meter on each of the lights to ascertain current flow. That is how I zeroed in on the double-filament culprit.

Best!

You need to replace the light circuit panel

It is very finicky about the bulb resistance. Have all brass base or silver base bulbs.
2 working bulbs with a difference in resistance will do it.

Default Brake light switch

I had exactly the same mysterious problem of random 'check rear lights' warnings and all my lights were always working! After changing bulbs and tightening sockets I still got random warnings. I finally solved it by replacing the brake light switch behind the brake pedal.
