Default cigarette lighter to charge cell phone

I have a 2000 xj8 and my phone charger doesn't work in the cigarette lighter. I suspect it is a fuse problem, but am interested to know if anyone else has had this issue. Thanks

I quite often use mine to charge a gps, never had a problem.
Does the lighter element heat up? If so, then it is not a fuse problem.

Power to the lighter plug is only on with ignition. Are you testing with the key on?

Fuse is possible.. if it doesn't work with the key on, ask again... too late to look up the fuse right now.

Default lighter problems

98 xJ8 I have the same problem and I changed every fuse with no result.I even checked the wiring and I can't charge or run my tom tom gps now. It was working a week ago until a dime got stuck in the socket that is why I thought a may have shorted it out. There is still a chance it could be on a fuse I am unaware of yet I could use a fuse box diagram to be sure.I feel so needy with you guys and I hope one day soon I can be the one to help others.you folks are great thanks and keep up the good fight of helping one another.:

You will find the fuse locations in this PDF File. Pages 4-12 thru 4-24.

Cig Lighter Location is Fuse #5 in the Trunk. Hope this is it...

Actually, this works on my 1999 XJR, so hope it's the same for your 98.

FYI: If you have not already run into this, there are FIVE (5) Fuse Boxes in this car. WOW!

I don't have the lighter element and I did test with the ignition on. Sounds like a fuse problem. Thanks for the details.

Fuse #5 was blown. Good diagnosis!

FYI JITS lists the ciagretted lighter as #14 in right hand kick board.... obviously wrong... frustrating that the service manuall is wrong.

Actually, different model year X308s have different cigar lighter locations.

I don't doubt that you are right. However JITS allows you to specify your model year and it yielded an inaccurate fuse chart.

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to say THANKS!!!!!

My cigar lighter is missing and when I got an iPhone charger it didn't work! I found this thread (and several others) and wanted to say...

The cigar lighter fuse is in the boot in position #5, 25A -- 2003 XJ8.

The fuse was blown, there was a fuse removal tool and two spare 25A fuses inside the fuse box cover -- an easy fix thanks to the help I got here.

My fuse box cover does not have a fuse position label on it. This thread took the guess-work out of fixing it.

Default Thanks to all

Finally found what I needed, when I needed.
The Dealership that sold me my 1999 XJR (one previous owner) came with the manual and other supporting documents for the XK coupe, not the XJ. I did not notice until a few years later when we moved and I started to perform the simplier services. I looked a while ago and did not find the fuse box diagram ...until now!

Thanks again!
