Question Code P0710 on my 1998 XJ8

Hello, this is my first post as I just found this wonderful site. I just recently bought a 1998 XJ8 despite the reviews because 1- Paid only $1500.00 CND $ and
2- I have always loved the style of the Jaguar.
I bought this car last week, put the temp permit on it, and proceeded to drive it home. The stability and traction control fail keep appearing (which I knew about) but a few days later a message appeared stating "high temperature gearbox". I got my Dads OMB2 reader and plugged it in and it spit out P0710 which I have looked up and means " Temperature fluid control sensor circuit malfunction" and P1111.
The gentleman I bought this car from showed me his bill for a remanufactured transmission costing over $3300.00, just curious of any ideas someone might have on my issue? I have been "googling" the internet for 3 hours trying to find an answer to my code P0710. I was wondering if it could be a dirty sensor and if so, where would it be located? Thanks for reading about my problem.

I think that the clue may be the stability & traction control failing messages. I had this and it pointed to a faulty battery. Since I put a new one in I have had no problems.

Jags seem to be funny about batteries, get it tested and buy a new one if it is at all suspect.

Thank-you for the reply! The fellow I bought it from just actually put in a new battery because the old one failed, but I will try anything, I appreciate the response....knew I joined a great site!

Default P0710

I have read where these early XJ8s had issues with the wiring harness that goes to the transmission. I believe there was a technical service bulletin on this. I don't know if you've heard of this, but try searching on transmission wiring harness in the archives here or other forums or google. Also, if you have a subscription to Alldata they have all the TSBs there. Maybe someone else will chime in that has had the problem.

Thanks for your response as well JimmyL. I did as you said and read through and the transmission wiring harness seems a likely culprit also!
I haven't had a chance to change the battery yet but worth a try as it is easy to rule out. I am going to look into this and see what I can find...just wanted some direction and every remark is very much appreciated!

Forget the battery, that a temp sensor in the trans and its integral to the trans internal wiring harness. It needs to be replaced(the internal harness)

Thanks Brutal! Do you think thats what is the problem with the traction control and the stability control fail issue as well?, or just the problem involving the code and high temperature gearbox message? I plan on getting it checked out after Christmas anyway but wanted a gameplan and some knowledge to guide me so very much appreciated!

Has nothing to do with trac/abs, but everything to do with trans temp high. I would go to the tranny shop and see if they will warranty, even though thats not a part that would ever be replaced on a rebuild. But they may help you a little on cost, or they might just do it under warranty if theyre in a christmas good mood

I get by but usually trust others over myself as I lack confidence in unfamiliar territory.
No need to undo the tranny? I am going to look into this as I am willing to try my luck, as I stated in my first post, I didn't pay much for it so I wasn't expecting a mint car or no headaches but certainly willing to venture. I love the ride of it.

No you just drop the pan and replace the trans internal harness that goes to shift solenoids, sensors etc....and its color coded and layed out as it run. Just take before pics to referrance layout and harness run through retainers
