Door lock woes
Hi all,
I posted about this when I first joined but didn't get any response...
The driver's door lock on my 2003 XJR (original owner) with 131,000km (82,000mi) has been acting up for about 6 months now.
When I use the remote, the driver's door will NOT lock or unlock, I have to do it manually or with the key. Is this a door lock actuator or something?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I would be suspicious of the batteries in the key fob. If not that, the contacts within the key fob. From there I would make sure the fob is programmed to that vehicle. Mine had dirty contacts when I got it. I was able to get it working pretty well after cleaning it using tips found on these forums. Just some ideas! Hope this helps!
Do the lights blink and the car chirp and can you hear the lock actuator making any noise ? If you push the unlock button twice in a row, does it unlock the rest of the doors ? With mine, one push just unlocks the driver's door, two pushes and it unlocks all the doors. If everything else is working, then it sounds like the lock actuator either not working, or there's too much slack in the linkage.
Thanks for the replies guys!
Yes, everything else is working. All chirps are normal, trunk opens and 2 clicks opens all the doors.. I also noticed the lock/unlock button on the dash does not lock or unlock the drivers door. I have to either use the key or pull it up/push it down manually.
Is the actuator easy to replace myself if needed?

Oh snap, I didnt realize the other doors were actually locking
That does sound like an actuator. The actuator was attached to the latch when I removed mine last week. Surely, it has its own part number. Hopefully you dont have to buy the whole latch.

You're gonna need to remove the door panel (or door card). It's not that bad, and I'm sure there are write-ups in the archives. Just be careful removing the wood veneer piece on the door and be careful popping out the fir tree clips around the door panel, they can break.

My "fir tree" clips pulled out very easily. I presume they werent virgin, but I used them again! I would also like to reiterate how important it is to be careful with the veneer. Mine was already all cracked when I got the car
but too much flexing can cause more cracking. You have to remove the door handle cup first by removing the black blanking plug and removing the phillips screw. Then you can work the cup out of there. When it comes to veneer, start at the very rear of the wood veneer piece. You need a trim tool or a very small flat screwdriver, preferably wrapped in electrical tape to prevent panel marking. Stick the screwdriver very carefully behind the veneer and push it underneath a little bit. You can now use it as a level to pull outward on the veneer. Be careful, the rear half is held on by clips that require an outward pull. The front is not! After releasing the two rear clips, carefully slide the veneer rearward with a light wiggling motion to disengage it from the inner door handle frame! Be careful and good luck! Maybe you can just clean the actuator and lube up the latch with silicone spray while you have it out. (Lithium grease may be better, but I did go with the silicone last time!)
