Hello, need some help with a 2002 4.0 which I replaced the engine with a 2003 engine. The car starts and runs great for about 10 miles then goes into restricted performance and failsafe mode. Pulled the codes and keep getting random misfire codes, replaced coils, plugs O2 sensors, cam position sensors to no avail so decided to buy a ECM off Ebay with the exact same numbers. I disconnected the battery placed the cabled together for 3 minutes, turned the ignition on for 1 minute and tried to start but wont start. I am going to disconnect the battery and clamp the cables together overnight with the ignition on. Charging the battery overnight, does anyone know any other tips to reset the ECM so I can make this work for my car?

It may now be in anti-theft in which case you may need a dealer tool to reset it.

First, a question. Did the ECM match the '02 car or the '03 engine?

First thing that comes to mind is that the ECM is going to have to be programmed matched to all the modules in the car.

It depends on which "exact same numbers" are actually on the module, yes the part numbers are the same, but is the firmware - in this case they're not.

Bit quick off the mark to think the ecm is the fault. If you can post the codes that would help us to decide what route to take to get it fixed.

With misfires it can be a mechanical fault along with electronic - did you diagnose the injectors, injector harness, measure fuel pressure and fuel delivery, check compression on the replacement before installing, checked for air leaks, checked the MAF etc etc. I can have a high old time carrying out the basics before I decide a CAN networked module that starts the car is faulty....just saying

What codes pray tell.....

You need to perform an 'Immobilization Setup' to the vehicle.
This will allow all the modules on the CAN bus to communicate properly.

I don't remember the exact procedure because I have not had to do this for several years now.

PDU, WDS or IDS is required and I don't know if any other scan tool will work.

The application is in the VEHICLE CONFIG TAB, (Configure Modules I think or maybe Special Apps)

If anyone out there remembers the procedure, please chime in.

I thought there was a TSB or Tech Tips email from 10 or 15 years ago but I can't find it right now.

Checked the Fuel rail pressure, new MAF, timing compression. I only went with the different ECM because of all the diagnosis I have done left me with nothing more but the ECM. The number were the Jaguar LNG1410BD and below that is the MB079700-8980 which match mine exactly. The codes read anywhere from all the P0300, 0301, 0302 etc all the way up to 308 all different each time never the same codes when this happens. Took it to the dealer and they $1800 to replace the coils and plugs (already done, they did not care). My understanding is the cam position send a signal the the ECM which then sends it to the coils which I thought might be the weak link. Like I said it runs great when the codes are reset or when it sits for a couple weeks. I would like to know more about the specifics about re-maping the "new" ECM or any other clues. All vacuum hoses and components replaced (snorkel and flexible hoses).

See motorcarman's post.

You sound to need a tech who understands the cars.

Bob,
Thanks for the help, are PDU, WDS or IDS types of scanners, brand names or acronymes. I am in need of a new more advanced scan tool so I would not mind getting a new one if you would be kind enough to provide some more info - thanks!

Bob is referring to is professional level software used by dealers and indy shops. A few individuals have it, but it's cost prohibitive for the typical home mechanic.

Well, I am learning a heck of a lot of ECM and flashing them. Dealers are about the only ones who will do it but they will not do a used unit - does anyone have a recommendation with regard to the software and code reader needed. This would be good information for not only me but anyone who does anything with an ECM ECU. This forum is always helpful usually more than a dealer could ever be or would ever be.

You will need to get the security module paired with the ECM, basically it is not recognising your key, when this is done all the other modules will do the same BPM etc and you should be good to go.

Once you have done this see what happens then....... As far as going to a Ford dealer they may be able to help as they do use similar systems no harm in asking

My experience with Ford dealers is that if the step is not on their flow chart they are pretty much lost. The equipment needed is going to be $1500 - $2500. Your best bet is an experienced indy Jaguar shop in your area.

What part of Cinc? Maybe someone here can recommend a good indy.

How do I get the security module and ECM paired?

See Bob's post. An experienced indy will understand what is required. For more detailed information see this post: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...d-truth-32683/

I'm going to suggest something different.

Disconnect the connector on the r/h side of the throttle body. The pins for the throttle body are gold plated. Are the female receptacles in the plug silver colored or gold? There was a service bulletin about incompatibility between the tin plating of the silver colored connectors in the plug and the gold plated pins.

If silver colored, clean both sides (plug and pins) with contact cleaner and apply silicone bulb grease to the plug and reconnect it. Did the problem go away?

If the car runs fine except for the warnings and codes, and is not actually misfiring, look at the power steering pulley and see if it is wobbling. If so replace it.

(Look at the pulley while the engine is running.)

I don't see how replacing a 4.0L engine with the updated 4.2L will work?
A lot of changes between the two engines?

Why did you not get another 4.0L?
