I had my 2001 4.0 litre oil changed
The tech said i have engine code P111 (timing chain)
He could not explain

Should probably be P1111

Which means the OBD system is happy. It's NOT a fault code.

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X308 forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) on your Jaguar model all have 4 numbers, not 3. There is no DTC directly associated with the timing chain. I agree with JagV8 that it's probably P1111 indicating all onboard monitoring tests have been completed.

Why was your "tech" pulling fault codes during an oil change?

As far as I know there is no single code for "timing chain."

What did your "tech" want to do about it?

I hope no one CLEARED that code or you will need to perform all the drive cycles to set readiness ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!

Ok Bob so what's involved in doing that or does it just do it itself,also is it worth doing a hard reset just for the sake of doing it or would that be tempting problems.

Usually driving the car around in varying driving conditions will set the code on its own, sometimes you need to follow the drive cycles if yours won't set P1111, there should be a guide to that in the Large Files Section on these forums.

 

The comical 'vicious-cycle' of P1111 and P1000.

I have a P1111 so I clear it. Now I got a P1000 but it won't clear. I drive the car and I get the P1111 AGAIN!!!! I clear it but it sets a P1000. I drive the car and I get the P1111 AGAIN!!!! What am I missing here? The car is supposed to show a P1111 when all the drive cycles have been completed and everything checks out OK.

If you clear a P0000 then drive, you will get a P1111, that is how it is supposed to work.

People post here that they got a P1111 (Intake air temp sensor fault?). That might be a DTC for some GM car but Jaguars log that code for 'READINESS TESTS COMPLETED'.

People panic and CLEAR the P1111 code and that sets the P1000 'READINESS TESTS INCOMPLETE'. They try to clear the P1000 but it will NOT clear.

They drive the car and the DAMN P1111 comes BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And so it goes.............................................. .....

And with luck they eventually find out that each of P1000 and P1111 - on these cars - is a status code, not a fault code.

All P1 codes on all OBD2 cars are allowed to be as decided by the car maker. Jaguar on these cars chose to do this (as do Ford on many of theirs and hey Ford owned Jaguar).
