Most probably I identified clicking. It comes from torque converter. I will confirm that once it will be replaced.

I am not sure if I understand rocking the prop. Does it mean to rock the car forward and backward?

It means to move the driveshaft back and forth to see if you can
isolate any sound it may make.

Hi Zdicho,

The idea is to grasp the driveshaft with your hands and try to rotate it clockwise and counterclockwise, then try to push it up and down, then side to side, then pull it forward and rearward. You're looking for excessive movement or backlash that would indicate a problem with the driveshaft center bearing or U-joint, the transmission output shaft and forward driveshaft flexible coupling (flex disc or giubo), the differential pinion bearings or rear driveshaft flexible coupling, etc.

Cheers,

Don

Used torque converter arrived but does the same kind of clicking noise... Does anybody have the possibility to access torque converter connected to the gearbox on the shelves and check if it is clicking this way?

It sounds like you might be dealing with a common issue in the Jaguar XJ8,
where the torque converter can cause a ticking noise. This can often be
due to wear and tear or issues with the torque converter lockup mechanism.
If you have replaced it with a rebuilt, then it sounds like the rebuilt did not
adequately address the issue.

OK. Back at the beginning Torque converter is not a root cause and its "clicking" when rotating by hand is a habit and most probably normal. I tested it on another two cars simly by disconnecting covnerter from the engine and by rotating it while still installed in the car.

When the engine is idle you can barely hear knocking inside the cabin and when you select Drive while holding brake it becames much louder. Any idea if VVT unit could cause that?

Our X308 supercharged engines don’t have vvt. It is possible that it’s internal to the engine. A mechanical oil pressure gauge might be of help.

So the "observed" clicking of the torque converter is not the issue.
And....after 90 postings we are still no closer to discovering the root
issue.

This, from the very first line of the very first post. Zdicho, I think being away and then back to the car has made you overthink this. You've checked pretty much everything internally and externally on the engine, but the culprit is actually bolted to the engine. Ancillary parts to check include water pump bearing, air con pump and clutch bearing, power steering pump and alternator - one of these units is creating this noise and not the engine, you said it yourself.

This is not even an issue but "normal" state. All my 3 cars are clicking this way.

Sean B: This statement was actually wrong. I tried to explain that later on with some subjective observation that it was maybe related to ambient temperature.

Corect statement is: Although the serpentine belt is removed the engine is still making clicking noise. Now suspecting VVT unit but some people say that newer units (with grooves) do not make such noise.

I am putting this topic aside for a while as we are now facing enormous floods in Central Europe and I am helping my family to clean-up after flood disaster.

Good luck with the clean up. Those floods look awful on the news footage I've seen.
