Engine model
sorry to sound ingnorant, so is the engine model AJ26.
Secondly please can you advise what is the difference between XJ8 and XJR. Jag dont make it easy when you trying to find out info regarding the car.
Can you also throw any light on smoke from the exhaust on start up for a few seconds. would it be the guides/stem seals or does the Nickersell lining wearing out.

The engine model is AJ26.
The XJ8 has a normally aspirated engine the XJR is supercharged. A litte research on the Internet highway will yield a plethora of information.
Light smoke could indicate many things. What color is the smoke, whitish (water), bluish (oil) or blackish (carbon, fuel)?

Thanks for the reply on the engine model.
With regards to the smoke from the exhaust on some start ups, the colour is diffcult to define as there it is only a puff for about 5 secs. I would say more black than blue.
I do get a stream of about 10 secs when i floor the car i.e at 4/5k on the revs. i dont think this is normal.

Is the 1997 XJ8 known as another model. The car was reg 31/10/1997.
Secondly, is there any way of finding if the engine has Nicasil lining. i sent Jag UK a e-mail but no reply as yet.

Jagman:
Your car is what we in the US, anyway, refer to as a MY98. Itis known as an XJ8 or an X308. It IS Nikasil. If you are concerned, you get a leakdown test done.
I will let others offer their opinion about the reasons for smoke. BTW, my Nikasil engine has coverd 245,000 miles, no problem.

I'm trying to identify if my XJR has aj26 or aj27 engine. Looking around the forum I found info that the engine number should be visible from underneath the car on the left side of the engine, close to the steering rack. Correct?
OK, if I find the number, how to tell if the engine is aj26 or aj27?
BTW: I don't know the production date of the car, just when it was registered for the fist time. On to of it the engine was replaced (or renewed, don't know exactly) by Jaguar.
Thanks.

Someone may well say that I am wrong, but if the engine is after 2000 it should be an AJ27.
The engine no' is more like a date code. You don't give the number but you can work it out for yourself.
Example: 0008181043 = 18 August 2000, time 10.43. (the first steel lined engine I believe).
Don't think I got it wrong, but someone with better knowledge of newer cars may have something to add.
Cheers,

thanks for the answers,
I probably didn't stress enough that the engine might have been replaced and therefore the VIN based identification of the engine could be misleading. (but it can be useful test if it was really replaced)

Quickest way is look at the cam covers. An AJ27 will have the solenoids that operate the VVT portruding through the top front of the cam covers. An AJ26 will not. Instead they enter through the heads at the fronts.
If the engine swap was done at a dealer the Jaguar on-line data base should have a record of the work and the replacement serial number. Did the 'R' have the VVT?
