Engine noise
Hey guys, so, xj8 with dead fuel pump, thought was poor compression so I filled the spark plug holes with oil, I’ve since changed the pump and filter, stated first time no problem, ran very lumpy for about 10 minutes, give it some revs and it stalled and actually came up with a warning saying stalled which I’ve never even heard of before, everything was fine before the pump went so not sure what’s caused it, maybe the oil in the plugs? I’ll post two videos and see what anyone thinks. Always had a slight knock but I’m sure it sounds louder
First off, could you please post your yr and model in your signature? This way we don't have to ask this Q all the time. Different yrs, different motors, different improvements...and we can dial in what common issues for certain yrs are most prevalent to discuss.
Initially it sounds like an exhaust leak.
Have you had or the previous owner had the tensioners done? Unless yours is a late 2002, early 2003...that will be needed done if they haven't.
Here's a comparison of the types used in the 4.0L, until they finally put in metal ones for a final fix.

Apologies, 2001 XJ8 4.0, they only went to 2002 with the x308, never understood how the Americans go to 2003 😂 had tensioners looked at last year and looked absolutely fine, as I thought that might be the knocking sound but apparently it wasn’t, I just don’t understand why it’s like this after the fuel pump change, could my throttle body be fowled from the oil in the plugs?
I'm not sure how Jaguar dispersed its product, but 1/2 way into 2003, we had the X308, then the X350 was introduced. I guess we're the step children for Jaguar....lol
I don't know how the TB would be causing a noise like that. I seriously think you have a exhaust manifold leak. If you don't have one, get a engine stethoscope and probe around with it. Be careful, a noise like that can be piercing to the ear. Just put one ear piece in and not all the way until your sure you won't blow your ear out with the noise.

One thing to keep in mind working on a car....don't try to relate issues. Yes, some will be related...but some just happen simultaneously.
Before you go nutz with what else can be wrong I would read the codes 1st..
I can tell you on my car I had a knock sensor that was bad so I replaced it only to find i also had a bad wire from the knock sensor at the connection block just before the ecm it was grounding out and because of that the car ran like I lost/dropped a cylinder which had me testing coils over and over, the trunk or boot wouldn't release windows didn't always work the 1st or 2nd time I pressed the button. .
Once I found the grounding problem everything came to life and ran better...
So read codes then tackle things one at a time.
That's how I would do it.... But that's just me...

Ok i understand. .
Believe me I've read though this site of problems and how they were resolved just to know, I guess curiosity.
Hopefully the code reader will give you a little insight.
Is this car new to you?

Morning. ...
ok good, read codes and hopefully you will have some answers, something simple.
I can say a bad sensor that causes a ground issue will cause other sensors to act up, like not work ,give you false readings on others and have you chasing your tail...
