Default engine oil

I've just been on the official Castrol site and they recommended 10 40w Magnatec,my question is,would this oil be acceptable or do I HAVE to use 5 30w, BTW, i should have said, its for a 1998 xj8, I already have about 4 litres of the 10 40w so it would be a waste if I couldn't use it

Its not going to destroy the engine, especially with the miles probably on a 12 year old car. Consider mixing with the 10w30 weight for the other 4 quarts since it is still Winter.

I hate to discuss religion, politics, or motor oil. That said, just look at the additives package for the oil you are considering running. If you are on this site then maintaining your jag is important to you and you keep your oil changes done to the point that the base oil is probably not that big of a deal.

I look at the zinc/phos content. There is a concern about the cats if the content gets too high. The oil you are looking at has a good additive package and a good base oil.

I run the mobile 1 15/50 (1200ppm)in my jags, race cars, tow vehicle, lawnmower, ect and have never broken a motor, not even on track or in my tow vehicle with 289k on it. If I have to buy a cat someday I'm ok with that.

Others will feel differently.

well I went out today and bought 4 litres of 5 30w Magnatec so I think i'l use that and follow TP,s advice and make up the difference with the 10 40w,the car has 110,000 on the clock so a drop of heavier oil probably wont go amiss

5w-30 is Jag recommended.

Perhaps reserve the thicker oil for summer use? Engine wear is highest at cold start up.

Well, I've just done the oil change,I used 5 litre's of 5 30 and 1 litre of 10 40,sound's and runs fine.
I have to say it was the easiest change I've ever done, with the drain plug on the front corner and the filter right next to it I didnt need to get under the car
