Default Enter the "new" WaterDragon : 2001 Sapphire Blue VDP

I'm back Did you miss me? Has all the dust settled?

Just yesterday I bought a new "WaterDragon" this time a 2001 VDP Sapphire Blue over Oatmeal interior. 57K original garage queen / creampuff miles.

It does need the secondary timing tensioners to be upgraded as I just pulled a valve color and saw the original orange ones. Uncle Buck and I will fix that right away, no sweat. We've already done 4 sets, so I don't anticipate any problems.

I will be making only a few cosmetic changes, swapping on my personally preferred Penta wheels, removing the window tint, have the few dings removed and polish that beautiful sapphire paint. I plan on flushing the trans of this as well as the wife's 2002 Blue Zircon XJ8. I am planning on NOT molesting this one like I did my XJRs. This baby is just to be a comfortable cruiser. Driving it is like being in a spa. Traffic, meh, who cares, I'm resting in the luminosity of the VDP interior, everything is all right...

The interior looks like it was never sat in. I've never seen one in this good condition before.

Check out the burl, and notice the seat looks like it has never been sat in. This is the very definition of "creampuff": http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1fb8v1ik.jpg

The only flaw we found was the sagging headliner, and a few dings and scratches on the exterior. It was listed on craigslist yesterday, and less than 3 hours later I was driving it home Clean carfax. Already had the fuel pump replaced, nothing else remarkable history wise. It looks as if it has never had any oil leak, ever. This one was quite the find. It was just traded in at a dealership.

Might anyone in the San Francisco Bay area have a recommendation for where to have the headliner correctly replaced?

Just a little background to those who are new since I disappeared from the Jagboard.

Here is the video of my XJR 0-100 mph run at approx 18 PSI on the Eaton.

Check out some of my older posts to see just how far I molested my XJRs...

I did a few write ups in the engines section. Safe to say I pushed the envelope just a bit...

Correct, no more muppet labs. I think the muppets retired and are now just simply enjoying life

I wonder how long the no molestation lasts? Given your track record of trick ^^^^ing other units.

6mm staples works very well for the headliner and practically unnoticeable.

I will admit to my plans of some minor cosmetic molestation, penta wheels is about it. I might re badge the car as a honda accord, but that is about as far as I think I can go with this one.

Might you have a photo of these 6mm staples installed?

With the non-supercharged motors, I don't think there is much that can be done to improve on the existing power levels, is there? The XJR was just begging for mods, the VDP, not so much opportunity. Not a problem though as this one is designed to be just a comfortable cruiser. Good enough for little ol me.

Of course I'm going to replace the secondary tensioners with non self destruct mode units.

Welcome back, Jeff! I am sure even the cosmetic touches will spark plenty of lively conversation.

Thanks Dan. Good to see your still around too.

Just swapped on the Penta wheels for a little more sporty look:

Default How can I miss you when you won't go away!

I can't believe this guy is trending with 13+ replys! Although, most are him tooting his own VDP horn. I've said it before, in the forum, this guy is certifiably crazy! Of course, I egg him on. We'll see how long he can keep his lust for speed under control. Seriously, the car is way cool. We caravaned back from Sacramento 3 days ago. Lots of folks on CA 80 got to see two '01 VDP's in a row. I'm actually looking forward to doing the tensioners with him.

I just found this old video of my XJR with "only" 16 psi of boost

http://vid1295.photobucket.com/album...psoi9e1nn2.mp4

The 18-19 psi was noticeably faster. It was no slouch at 16 psi though, especially since it was wearing "xj8" badges

Nah, I was just purging the last remnants of old videos on my photobucket and found that one, thought I would post it.

I'm feeling a bit of the "been there, done that" with the modifying the XJRs. If I get the itch to go really fast I can borrow my brothers over 500 RWHP 2600lb DeTomaso Poonterra (just calling it what it is I do still appreciate reading the forums and seeing people do their own mods like XJR99 to me is very impressive and fun to follow. It is much easier on the pocketbook too to read about it than do it myself.

Swapped on the XJR wheels yesterday.

Today it got a new clear windshield (it had a moderately tinted windshield) weird.... I much prefer the clear windshield. I'm removing the side window tint and leaving the rear tinted.

Finished changing the secondary timing chain tensioners.
Just under 58,000 miles
Just the startings of some tiny cracks, hardly worn.

I must say, it is much easier doing anything under the hood without a super charger and the requisite accompanying spaghetti in the way.

Fortunately, the install went very smoothly, everything co-operated nicely.

A big thank you to Buck for his help.
A good tip from Buck if you are going to do this yourself was to spin the motor until none of the lobes on the cam are pressing on any lifters. You can check if you are in the right spot by sliding a piece of paper between the cam and lifters. This way the cams come out and back in very easily. We used a sharpie pen to mark the cam position so we knew we did not somehow jump a tooth (yes we used multiple zip ties).

New clear windshield went in Thursday, so now just to remove some of the tint, get the few dings removed, and buff the paint and she will look brand new.

Those cylinder heads are sparkling clean, I'm slightly jealous.

Also, another way of ensuring that the cam lobes aren't pressing down on the lifters is to try spinning the lifters with your finger. If they turn freely, the cam lobes aren't pressing down on them.
