Morning all ... before I decide to dismantle it for re-furb ... can anyone tell me .. is the front grill surround on a 99 4lr XJ8 Sovereign ... metal or plastic ? ...to go to a chromeing Co or a Vacuum Metallizer Co ??

All plastic, you can get the chromed surround.

 

the surround is stainless steel, a the inserts are plastic

 

Thank you .. I presume S/S can go for regular chroming process? .. if so ... thats great news ! ... supprisingly (not) here in Africa .. no one does vaccume metalizing.

 

The older X300 models were metal; but the X308 versions are plastic, not stainless steel.

So a 1999 model would be plastic being an X308.

 

my 2001 xj8 has a steel grille. i had a damaged one that was damaged, and it was steel as well

 

Thats strange, I have had three X308's and they have all been plastic? - I wonder if it varied in different countries?

I'll be checking the grille on my Daimler when I get home!

 

i bought this car used. so who's to say it wasn't relaced with an earlier year, i don't know ?

 

I checked mine quickly at the weekend. At first glance I thought it was plastic, as it was not cold to the touch as I was expecting, but on closer inspection it is certainly metal. It looks like cast aluminium to me; but I could be wrong.

 

its could be that they ran out old stock till the change; or at some point they found a vendor that could make them out of plastic allot cheaper
