2001 XJR: I'm replacing the front shock plates and bushings today. The driver side took about 15 minutes. The passenger side is another story

The plate will not release from the shock. The other one simply pulled off. This one did not. I've tried turning the shock to unscrew it as if it had a thread, but it isn't moving at all. I've pulled pretty hard and nothing.

Has anyone had this issue? and is there a simple fix?

Spray w/ WD-40 or equivalent let sit then try, likely corroded.

I did that already and it hasn't released. The shock spins easily as if there is no corrosion. Not sure how hard to pull??? I have pulled pretty hard

 

Not seen that before, obviously it is corroded in place. As per KC, lots of freeing agent. Also try holding the top flats on the shock unit stem and rotate the shock plate. And/or hold the top washer of the bushing with a pipe wrench, and try turning the shock stem with the two flats at the top.
A good freeing gent and time is probably what will work in the end.

 

I guess crying out for help sometimes jump starts the brain and a more creative way appears. I took one big green vinyl hammer and put it under the plate and tapped the shock down. It worked. Once it came off … I found a tiny c-clip that was probably holding it on. I don't think that c-clip belonged there. Anyway, everything it perfect. Now for the test drive to feel the difference
