Default Fuel Injectors - $1,600!!!!

My nightmare continues. As some of you might remember, I started to replace my thermostat at the end of March but ended up taking the car to a local mechanic to finish the job. After getting the thermostat, thermostat tower, crossover pipe and a few other parts replaced, the mechanic told me I needed fuel injector O-rings, manifold gaskets, heater hoses, and the long breather hose assembly -- he was going to order the parts from the local Jaguar dealer for $900, but I got them all from Wesh Ent. for $244. This all happened the day before my month-long vacation was to start, so I took the car home and parked it in my garage for a month. Today I took it, and my box of parts, to the mechanic.

Now he tells me that the part he needs is the seal/o-ring or whatever it's called that is between the manifold and the injector -- bad news -- that part is not available so I need 8 new fuel injectors at $200 a piece!

I'm pissed. I'll get over it, but for now I'm not happy. I'm at the point of blaming my mechanic but don't know what to do. I need to get my car back.

Are there any alternatives? Used parts, remanufactured parts, or what?

I really don't want to spend $1,600 fixing something that should've been left alone.

woe, that sounds expensive.
most injector O-rings cost around 20 cents US up to maybe $3.00 US, each.

unless they are some unusual type?

The injectors use two O rings -- I know you can purchase them -- is this what you need?

I think they are about $20.00 ---still not cheap.

I did one of my MB rails and they were only a few dollars

He already replaced the injector o-rings. The part he now needs is the injector to intake manifold seal (not the manifold gaskets, those have also been replaced). I'll try to find out exactly what it's called, or a get a photo and post it tomorrow.

Please get a photo. I looked at the injectors on the parts catalog and there is only the upper and lower orings for the injectors. The ends of the rails have orings for the crossover pipe.

I have a complete fuel rail with 8 injectors for $290 if you want to try it and end up keeping them. Just pay for the shipping and I'll send them to you to try. It worked on my car when I installed in for a week trying to locate a hige vacuum leak (which turned out to be a cracked injector-probably from when it was being cleaned)

You are welcome to try it, and if for any reason it does not work for you, send it back for no charge. These are for the XJR, I see you have the XJ8....this could be a problem.

Old Mike
Look at this other thread on fuel injector clean/repair (post# 1):

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-photos-70199/

Mentions and gives weblink to a company in Texas that cleans/repairs these fuel injectors at $18 per injector.

There is also a fuel injector repair kit (set of 8 for $32.97) on ebay that seems to fit 1999-2002 Jaguar XJ8 4.0L. It also should fit your 2003 XJ8, but says it does not - probably in error.

Thanks Jim.

If you click on the ebay link in Jim's post, the part I need is the "seal" that is pictured to the left in the photo. I truly don't understand why, but that's what I need right now. I'm pretty sure the injectors are okay, unless one or more broke when the mechanic took them out!

I might just have to order that kit (which includes stuff I don't need) or I'll have to get new or remanufactured injectors.

Here's one link for the reman. injectors that I keep running into -- I can't tell if the seal is part of the item or not. If it is, it might be better to get these at about the same price as the "kit" mentioned above.

Sorry to hear about your nightmare Mike. Why is the mechanic saying you need injector seals, o-rings, or whatever ? Are you all chasing a vacuum leak ? It sounds kinda like he is playing fast and loose with your money by throwing expensive new parts at it. We all hate to see that happen.

I think I'm with JaguarJon here. I'm not sure the guy you are using knows what he's doing. I don't see the progression and deepening expense as you've laid out. What exactly is the problem he's chasing after replacing the thermostat???

You need a better diagnostician.

My two cents...........

The photo I was referring to above is this one - the part labeled "seal" is the one (8) I need.

Yes, we're chasing a vacuum leak. This all started out with me trying to replace my t-stat, etc. and causing more damage!

I ordered the kit for $33 and will see if the seals work. If not, all that is lost is some time and $33.

Good job, fellas!

Nice to know those seals can be had. I of course, can't get them from Jaguar, but they are so seldom needed that is wasn't a big deal. Hence my question as to why they were needed here.

Good luck!

Long story short -- reinstalling the injectors eliminated the leak, now I need a knock sensor!
