Default fuel tank pipes - which is which?

This is a quick plea for help - I've spent a good while reading the forum archives, and even longer wrestling with JTIS (XP only - fun!), but I'm still not really sure what I've got myself into.

I've inherited a 98 XJ8 in a non-running state. It's only throwing one fault code - P1722 - so I'm assuming the worst and planning for a transmission overhaul.

The actual problem is that the fuel tank was loose in the trunk when I go the car. The filler cap drain had got blocked and the tank had about two gallons of 50/50 water/fuel mix. Apparently it was never run like that - it's sat for about two years - but I'm also planning on flushing everything out. However, the genius that removed the fuel tank obviously didn't know that there were two pipes underneath and heroically bent them both when pulling the tank out. The problem is.. they're bent so flat I can't tell which one of them is which!

What I'm stuck with looks like this:

It's clear that one of the hoses curves round towards the back of the car, and given where the fuel filter is I'd assume this was the "to the fuel rail" hose.. and that the other one was the return.. but I'd much rather get it right first time

Neither hose is cracked, but they are both seriously bent.. so I guess I can count myself sort-of lucky.

Suggestions/help/advice, anyone? Much appreciated!

ok, look underneath were they both go, the one to the fuel filter is to the engine, the other is from the engine. You'll see the filter is only 18" from one of the ends. They should point straight up. Looks like you'll have to change the pump if its had water in there, I guess testing it is the next thing.
