Default Gas tank removal

Hey Group,

I'm getting ready to replace the fuel sender in the big cat. Any gotchas on getting the tank out?

Searched the forum but didn't find any pit falls on actually taking the tank out. Thanks in advance!

As the sender unit should be on the top of the tank, you only need to rock the tank forward. It helps to have it as near empty as possible, but take care with fuel vapor.

I'd suggest removing the fuel line from the fuel filter to the tank, and remove a fuel line to body bracket nearest the tank, this gives you the necessary tilt/wiggle room to access the 'hatch' without full removing the tank. It frees up the two fuel lines in and out of the tank. Remove trunk carpet (2 fir tree clips) and the two steel bands with D tensioners and use a boot lace tied to the trunk lid/hinges to hold them out of the way while doing the work.
Hope this helps

Hi JPM2001,

One of the best tips I know of is from our member aholbro1, who devised a simple tool made from PVC pipe to help make it easier to disconnect the fuel lines from the bottom of the tank. See post #1 in this thread, which shows the X300 tank, but the X308 details are similar:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...quired-163902/

Also, while you're going to the trouble, have you considered replacing the fuel pumps preemptively? If they're the original pumps, one or both will fail eventually.

It would also be a good time to replace the fuel filter.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks you guys, the pumps were just replaced about 6 months ago by Scott Jag for a good chunk of money because I didn't have the time or an extra car (I do now) I'm a bit irritated they didn't recommend changing the sender then, oh well. I'm tackling it this weekend, since the sender went bad it won't pass inspection because the comm bus won't reset until its working. Thanks again and hopefully I'll be back in my favorite ride Monday!

What is your sender doing? Mine works when the tank is full, but at about half full the reading drops to almost empty, then shows empty when there's about 10 gallons in the tank.

Isn't the sender situated in the side of the tank which dosen't need removing to replace it? On my '40 it certainly was.

Mark, did you get my reply? I answered you though email instead of the Forum, Rob, the XJR is different from the XJ8. Lucky me. I'm actually going to chicken out and have a local independent shop do it for me. They've do a good bit of work on it in the past and are reasonable. I am goin to tackle the shock bushings, third brake light and door check issues that we all seem to get sooner or later
Thanks
Jon

I don't think you understand that from VIN F20645 the senders are INSIDE the tank mounted on the fuel pump holding bracket.

Thanks for the clarification, luckily I haven't had to look at my fuel tank so was working on incorrect information.

Hey Group, thought I would throw out an update. Sent the Big Cat to the shop as I just didn't want to tackle it. New sensor from Scott Jag $250.00, New Trunk (Boot) lid struts from Welch $36.00, All installed, tested and the NC inspection complete. $650.00. Big Cat is back in action, Priceless.

Hey Mark, I didn’t answer your question. Mine started going to zero and setting the “No comm from the fuel sender” on the CAN bus. Sometimes it would read 1/4 tank then go to zero again. Setting the no comm code would fail the ECM from talking to the inspection equipment.

Hi Jon, sounds almost the same as mine. I haven't had the CAN bus issue, just CELs with a DTC of P0460. Hmmm, after typing that last sentence, maybe the CEL is the CAN bus issue (?) I got a new sensor for $172 from the outfit that bought Gaudin. They're now Jaguar Land Rover of Las Vegas, and the best part is that they also own JLR of Reno. I live about 50 miles south of Reno, so if I need a part immediately I can order online then go pick it up. Anyway, I haven't put it in yet as I can't get the fuel tank drained. I've done it before, replaced the fuel pumps back in late 2011, but can't remember what I did to drain the tank. I think that I took the fuel line from the inlet side of the fuel filter and hooked up a siphon pump, but that's not working this time. So, I'm draining it the easy way: drive the car till it runs out of gas and have a 2-gallon gas can in the trunk.
Thanks for the info and have a good weekend !!
Mark
