Default Gearbox

Hi All,

I am trying to determine the revs that the gearbox changes up at.
This 2002 model XJ8 changes at about 3,000 rpm under normal acceleration. My last XJ8 used to change about 2,000 rpm. It was a much newer box with only 38,000 miles on it. The mileage indicated on the odometer on this car is 158,000. I feel a gearbox filter and oil change would be beneficial. Would this be likely to lower the revs? I am unable to find out if the oil has ever been changed at all. Thanks Bill W.

Question gearbox

Hi,
All I can say for certain is that the light in the sport button does light up when pressed and go out when pressed again. To me, when it is lit it indicates that the box is in sport mode. As yet I have only used it in "Normal" mode.
Could the light be going on and off as the button is pressed, without changing the "mode" of the box??

Not likely, but you should see the difference in the shift points.

If the button is "UP", it's in sport mode; if it's pressed in, it's in normal mode.

(typical British...push in to make it normal...lol...like driving on the other side of the carriageway from the rest of the civilized world...)

What you seem to be describing is that your transmission is in sport, which would give you the elevated switch points (aprx 3K RPM).

Press the "S" button in, and your box should shift around 2K depending on how much loud pedal you give it.

Ditto RJ and BD, mine shifts at 3k in sport, 2k in normal, unless the battery had been drained. Then it seems takes a drive cycle or two to start shifting at the lower RPMs again.

yeah, found that out, and should have known better...when I picked the kitty up after having an OH box put in, obviously, the battery was disconnected for and extended period of time. Got in, fired her up, and gently took off luxuriating in the feel of a new tranny. Know the feeling? Ahhhh...but the damn shifts were a lot more...um...vigorous than I remembered.

Calmed down after a couple cycles.

Same thing happened when I took apart the interior to do some radio/bluetooth install. Battery disconnected for most of the afternoon. Same thing. Slightly elevated shift points for a couple cycles.

Has to learn your style...I try and drive, most of the time, so that the shift points are almost undetectable.
