Default Gearbox Fault

My Jaguar is giving me problems.
It does start but, will not run, I step on the gas and, it will not move. I have parked it and have not moved it for 4 days now. Could someone who knows about these cars tell me please what to do? I have read online that it could just be the air filter, I need a new transmission. I appreciate any advice. Please be honest, I am thinking that I will have to sell it and, get very little money for it. I don't want to really but, I need a car and, not sure if I can afford it anymore.

Hi elic9,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Jaguar.

First of all, what is the year and model of your car?

Secondly, could you please give us a little more detail? You state that the "engine does start, but will not run. I step on the gas and it will not move." Do you mean that after the engine starts, the engine dies?

Or do you mean that after the engine starts and you move the gear selector lever to R or D the car will not move, even though the engine is running? If the engine runs but the car will not move with any gear selected, it could be that the transmission fluid is low, or there is a problem with the gear change solenoid, or a problem with the cable that connects the gear selector to the rotary switch on the side of the transmission.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Has the car been leaking transmission fluid?

Please let us know more and we'll try to help.

Cheers,

Don

Car is 2002 XJ8, has 114,671 miles. I do start it and will stay on but, will not go into gear...I think it is due for oil change and like you said transmission fluid.
It does not a have a gauge so when we tried to check it we cannot tell, and,
no it does not leak anything..problem is I cannot get anyone to come see it.
Do you think it will be something very pricey? I hope not.
Cheers Don and thanks for you help. I guess I have to pay someone to come see it, they said they would for $45.00. I really do not want to sell it and,
I know where I live it is not the market for this type of elegant car. I have been trying to take care of it and fix it.

Like Don said, it's likely a problem with the gear selector. Does the shift lever move at all, and do you step on the brake pedal while attempting to move the lever?
