Richard, in your post yesterday (1/10/22) at 9:16pm, you stated that the P1396 & P1000 codes came back. Let’s ignore P1000 until we get clarification on the other code first. Seeing as that’s not even 12 hours ago from the time I post this, does P1396 in fact come back up as an issue? Yes or no?

yes those are the two that come up no matter how many times erased but I also have a timing either tensioner or chain rail issue and i now know they will throw a check engine light but no specific code

You must fix whatever causes the P1396.

i did fix the other two codes that came up I found out the code 1396 is because I have either a timing chain tensioner or guide rail that is bad

And those codes are for a incomplete cycle so maybe I have to drive it longer for the cycle to complete I’ve gone about 55-60 miles since the hard reset and still has light on with them codes I’m not clearing codes cause i k ow that just starts a cycle all over so after 100 miles if it don’t go away to the dealer I go and they can hook it up to their fancy machines and figure it out I can’t do anything else

P1396 has NOTHING to do with Drive Cycles. You could drive FOREVER and it will NOT CLEAR. Here are the five possible causes of this code:

Until you find and fix the cause, P1396 will just keep coming back. When you have fixed the cause and then cleared the codes, P1000 will eventually be replaced by P1111 once all the OnBoard Monitoring Tests have been completed.

i had code come up for Vvt I replaced both of them brand new oem code went away I had an evap leak it was my gas cap brand new one and code went away if the Vvt code cleared how can 1396 be for a Vvt and how many Vvt solenoids are on a 2002 xj8 sport when i research only the two infront on each side but if there is more and one was bad wouldn’t it throw a code like the other one did

The VVT code is there because of your timing chain dilemma. At this point, ignore the code(s) until the timing chains, tensioners or chain guides are dealt with first.

If you're going to replace the coolant "tower", get an updated aluminum one.

You shouldn’t have to do a hard reset if you have the correct radio code.

I have the two cards with the correct radio code but all I get is wait. I hoped a hard reset would reset the ecu and radio. Thanks in advance

It certainly wouldn’t hurt to do a HR. If you had tried the code with the engine off, maybe have the engine running this time? 🤷‍♂️ I have encountered once or twice a radio that wouldn’t take the correct code and we ended up having to replace it. I can’t remember if we had tried a HR or not as this was years ago.
