I'm looking into putting HIDs in my regular low-beams and possibly fog lights. The only thread I could find was from the beginning of last year and it seemed like quite a few modifications were needed. The kit came from Michelle at HIDextras so I'm also wondering if she is still the site vendor as I didn't see the company listed under "vendors." I've installed HIDs in a sportbike a few years ago and that required some mods. I guess my questions are:

1) Have the newer kits been upgraded to be installed easier/better? I believe in the other thread, modifications were needed to hold the bulb in.

2) Are the kits on eBay any good? If I type in "02 XJR HID" I get a number of kits that will fit my car. I'm mostly concerned with installation as I really don't want to start splicing wires and drilling holes and all of that good stuff. I'm hesitant to believe they are truly "plug and play."

3) There was also an issue with flickering when starting the car with Auto On lights. My sportbike installation had the same problem and I had to install resistors that got incredibly hot. Are these still needed on the newer kits?

I'm sure since early last year, people have done some installations and might have some more recent feedback on newer products.

I have been wondering about this same thing.

 

The problem with installing HID's is that the reflection angles are different for HID and Halogen...so if you install HID's without the PITA angle adjustment you either waste your money or blind people in the other direction.

I installed the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra's in the Jaguar, they are supposed to be 50 percent brighter than stock.

In my new car I tried the Philips H4 X-Treme Vision bulbs and they are even better and are supposed to be 100 percent brighter than stock.

These are easy upgrades for under $50. and produce more light than the stock bulbs. Still not as good as my wife's Mazda5 with the xenon bulbs, but much more tolerable...

 

I actually had both low beams and fog light conversion to HID, they do require a bit modification and my mechanic friend did it for me. just it was a very simple wiring work and it takes about 30 minute.

To my knowledge is the your need to use the original bulb socket for the low beams and cut the HID bulb wire and glue it back to the socket.

Ok folks....looks like I blew a headlight bulb yesterday so now it's do or die....HID or get the Silverstars...I want the HID, but would like to see some pics of the necessary modifications.....

Thanks. I'll contact him, but I just found another thread stating that there's an adapter so the modifications may not be necessary.

In the meantime, are the high beams and low beams the same bulbs just aimed differently? I'd like to just throw one of the high beams in the low beam for a couple of days while I'm waiting...

Search ebay for "Kensun HID H7" They have a phone number that you can call and they are very willing to answer all your questions.

I just purchased and installed a kit from them in my daily driver for the fogs. Kit arrived in 2 days, install was a plug and play. I had to drill 1 1/4" hole to mount the ballst as I wanted a more secure mount.

 

The Main Beam bulb is a H1 and is different to the H7.

 

ebay search "Kensun HID H1" they are available too.

 

Both high and low beams are H7. I'm going to contact either Kensun (thanks Joycesjag) or HIDExtras as referred by another member in a previous post. I think with this H7 bulb adapter and either a resistor or relay that Sean B mentioned, I think I should be set.

 

To anyone wanting to do it safely and correctly-

Dead against main beam HID. Reason being no fast flash because they don't fire up immediately like incandescent bulbs. I only did dipped and fog conversion.

Safety - you must have electronic headlamp adjust fitted or you will get flashed. Another consideration is headlamp wash also, required here in the UK for HID fitment.

Relay harness has to be fitted to avoid one lamp on/one lamp off at startup/autoheadlamp feature will also not work. Ask me how I know!!

 

I have the Kensun kit awaiting install. How did you secure the bulbs. It appears that it is necessary to modify the original socket?
