Remove the grill inserts and pull the cables.

You should be able to access the cables through the grill. I am sorry...been a long time. You may want to wait for someone else to chime in too. Would hate to have wasted your time.

Mine won’t open from the driver side. So I’m stuck in the same scenario

You actually have to remove the fender liners as your dealer has said and believe it or not, drill a hole for access, then stick a long screwdriver through the hole and actuate the latch. BTDT. There's at least a couple of threads on here about it with pictures showing exactly where to drill. Have to be careful as on the passenger side here in the US, you're drilling about a 1/2 inch from the positive battery cable. What typically happens is the cable end will pop out of the retainer on the latch.
