How to adhere third brake light to window
Greetings.
My third brake light came off of the rear window. I’ve tried reapplying it with rear view window glue and double-backed tape. The rear view mirror glue won’t stick to the painted surface of the window, and the hot sun defeated the 3M double-backed tape.Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thank you!

Thank you for your quick response! I will look into this. I appreciate the help.
I used the Permatex glue. That lasted a few months. I used the 3M squares. That lasted less. I took a piece of foam tubing (the kind you wrap around a hot water heater pipe) and wrapped it in matching color electric tape and placed under to support with 3M squares. Don’t notice unless you look for it.
My third brake light also fell off recently, it wasn't difficult to fix properly, you just need to take your time - here's what I did, I hope it helps:
You need to use a glass to metal adhesive, just as you would for the rear view mirror. You can get kits from most auto shops, I used JB Weld MirrorWeld Rear View Mirror Adhesive
It was a pretty easy process.

It was a pretty easy process.
- You'll note that the brake light affixes to the window by metal squares - these pop out of the brake light quite easy via a small release tab.
- You must thoroughly clean the metal feet/area that will be affixed to the window. I used a fine metal file with the metal brackets in a vice - but you could use fine sandpaper - just make sure you're pressing on a hard/flat surface.
- You must also clean the window, I just used a glass scraper (one sided razor blade would work fine too).
- The JB Weld adhesive comes with two items:
- An activator cloth, you open the pack and wipe the glass and both metal feet as if you're thoroughly cleaning the two surfaces that you're about to glue. You then wait 30 seconds (but don't panic, it's not time sensitive, just give it at least 30 seconds).
- An adhesive, you apply one drop to the metal foot - don't be tempted to use any more or it'll squish out the sides and cause a mess - then you firmly press and hold the foot against the glass, it'll grab within a minute, then you can let go and do the other
- You need to mark exactly where the two metal feet will be affixed to the window. I created a little template using firm paper and taped it to the window. I used the marks from the old adhesive to align my template on the window.
- The plastic of my light housing was pretty brittle, you have to be careful not to break it. I would advise that you remove the light housing cover from the rear light before starting this process.
