Default How to replace Starter Motor?

anyone have a tutorial on how to replace the starter motor? It seems mine is bad, I have the instructions on alldatadiy but would like more help. It says you have to remove the steering rack is this necessary? should I leave it to a mechanic? I have a lil above average to average mechanic skills. thanks a lot.

Never heard of having to remove the steering rack.

But, the top bolt is hard to get at. JTIS describes the particular combination of sockets, universals and extensions. Others have posted their own favourite combinations.

It has also been described in other threads, so you might search for them.

You might want to check the positive stud on the false bulkhead and make sure you are getting power to the starter!!!!!!!

The right motor mount does get in the way a bit for the top fastener.

After following some bad advice from a Tow truck driver, and a local mechanic, I changed my starter

only to find later it was the battery that partially failed.

Don't make the same mistake I did...

Thanks for the replys, I haven't had time to check the car since its stuck about an hour away from my house. I did already order a 34$ used starter on ebay. but will check out the false bulkhead before doing anything. A local mechanic did say it was the starter though. He informed me he put power directly on the starter and it wasn't working.

To waterdragon did you have to remove the steering rack to access the starter?

I actually took it to my local mechanic, so I have no idea how it was done.

Hi I found this DIY 98 Jaguar XJ8 starter motor R&I article on the internet:

Open the engine compartment and fit paintwork protection sheets.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Remove the battery cover.
  2. Place the vehicle on a ramp.
  3. Working from below the vehicle, remove the steering rack for access.
  4. Disconnect the starter motor main terminal. Reposition the rubber boot from the main terminal. Remove the nut from the starter motor main terminal. Disconnect the main cable from the terminal.
  5. Disconnect the starter motor solenoid terminal. Reposition the rubber boot from the terminal. Remove the nut from the solenoid terminal. Disconnect the cable from the terminal.
  6. Remove the starter motor securing bolts. Remove the upper securing bolt. Preferably, use a short 13 mm spanner or a Snap On Half Moon spanner CMX1113 to initially loosen the bolt. (Refer to the next step). Remove the lower securing bolt. Carefully remove the starter motor.
  7. The upper bolt may be removed (after loosening) using a 3/8 square drive 13 mm socket, extensions and U.J as shown.
Installation
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the starter motor securing bolts to 35-48 Nm.
  2. Refit the steering rack as detailed in Operation 57.10.01. Refill the reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the steering system.
  3. Lower the ramp. Remove the protection sheets and close the engine compartment cover.
  4. Connect the battery and fit the battery cover. Reset the radio information and the clock.
There is also a PDF file - Starter Motor R&I in another forum thread:

Hmmm..... Remove the battery ground cable BEFORE you put the car up on a ramp? Perhaps "ramp" is British for "hoist."

Hi Boomer

Did you also see the install instruction? :
  1. Lower the ramp. Remove the protection sheets and close the engine compartment cover.
  2. Connect the battery and fit the battery cover. Reset the radio information and the clock.
It sure sounds like they are referring to a lifting mechanism.

The JTIS manual also has the same exact instructions.

Default There is also another newer thread on replacing starter motor

Here is another forum thread where forum member TheBrightKnight was able to replace the starting motor without removing the steering rack (see post# 1):

I did make the same mistake, except I didn't pull the starter. The battery has not been a problem. When I had a no-start condition, the battery "seemed" fine: lights, seats, etc. I could tell the solenoid was energized, but I figured a bad one. I ordered a kit, put the car up on jack stands and took a look to see what I was up against. Before going further, I wanted to check the battery voltage so I could see what kind of drop was at the starter.

When I checked the battery, it was 11.6 volts. Duh. The car sits over the winter (California mountains). When the roads are dry, I will take it out and run it around some just to warm up the tires and move the fluids around. Well, I suspect that I never fully charged the battery. And, of course, there is always some self-discharge. (I may get an AGM when I replace it since it does sit.)

Anyhow, simple first!

Is there an easy way to remove the top starter bolt on my 96 XJ6, that doesn't involve loosening the transmission cross member?

you need to go over to the X300 board, this is the X308 (V8) board.
