All, how is the diff disassembled? (I have a broken carrier, and a good used one stashed away). Looking at the parts drawing on SNG Barratt's pages it looks like the output shaft is held in place by a circlip, so removing the clip the shaft should pull straight out? If the "new" carrier is a wee bit off compared the wrecked one the shims need to be adjusted, is it the inner cup (not visible in the drawing) that should be unscrewed with a C-spanner leaving the outer cup (not numbered in the drawing) in place?
That means there is no shim pack for the output shafts. But to maintain camber for the rear wheels the spacer/shim between output shaft and drive shaft has to be changed if the shaft is moved in or out to keep the diff correctly set up.
DON'T touch or turn the aluminum carrier! That's used to adjust bearing preload in the diff. Unless of course that's what you're trying to do. If the bearing preload is good, don't screw around with the carrier.
Are you just trying to move the output stubs over from one diff to the other? If that's your goal, just remove the circlip, and then the output stub and its bearing pull straight out, use a prybar like xalty said.
I can get photos of an old removed output stub if it's useful.

Thanks yes should have elaborated on that. As it happens I have an early carrier from an XF. That will fit, because it was replaced by a Quaife unit which is the same that fits the XJR (QDF5W). I will check if it slips right in giving the right preload and tooth contact between pinion and crown wheel but I am not overly optimistic.
BTW did you reuse the circlips? The manual states new ones with a chamfer on both sides should be used but the part is listed as NLA.

xf 8.0 carrier has nothing to do with the 14hu hate to break it to you
Then how come the QDF5W which fits the XK8/X308 XJR also fits the early XF? I am telling you I bought and fitted the Quaife in the original XF diff housing of my car a few years ago, no modifications needed. So the carrier I removed from the XF must needs be fit the X308 HU14.

the qdf3w is for the ford 8.0. the 5 is for the 14hu
Don't you just HATE it when you think you have a part that fits only to find that you don't?
I have come home with boxed parts that were completely at odds with what the box said
was inside.

At least in this case I did not pay for the part. Not like when I went to one of the major independent part suppliers recently and got the wrong part twice! Ended up going to a smaller specialist supplier.

I think I did reuse the circlips, when I pulled two used axle stubs out of a junkyard diff I kept those circlips, and I just used whichever ones were in best condition out of the ones I had. I'm sure if you need replacements, you could just use the appropriate sized circlips off Mcmaster...
