we had quite a nor-easter round my way recently. but when it ended we went into a quick freeze. as fate would have it i had left the driver side window down a bit maybe an inch and a half through the storm. when i eventually got back to the car the thaw had not yet set in....it was still pretty cold and i noticed i was unable to move the toggle switches on the driver door switch pack. very likely water got in there.
I started the car and turned the heat up....after about 5-10 minutes the switches started to loosen up and i was eventually able to work all windows from the switch pack. i made sure all windows were up when i left the car so i left feeling fairly confident that the problem was resolved.
today i started up the car and could not get any of the windows to go down....even though the toggle switches were not frozen. i immediately checked to see if the sunroof would open and shut and it did. this led me to conclude that doing a cold restart with the battery would not solve the problem. however, i did disconnect the negative cable on the battery and later reconnected it. tried the windows again and still no luck....none of the window buttons will lower the windows. typically when they were working before and if you listen carefully you would hear a click as the window motor would engage to lower or raise the window...
further trouble shooting included checking the fuse which controls the rear window switch pack, driver door key panel ,the driver door switchpack and memory. this fuse is identified as #2 on left/drivers side rear compartment fuse box. i pulled it...its a 5 amp. looked pretty good to me but i replaced it anyway. than i tried the windows again....still no luck....
i continued.... with the "global open close" on the windows using the key and i was able to raise and lower all windows.....which led me to conclude that the door window motor was working. i also noted that when you press the center button on the door switch pack....it does not allow /permit opening or closing of both rear seat windows. when you release the button it permits raising and lowering using the rear window toggle switches. so the center button is doing what it is suppose to do.
finally, i noticed that the toggle switch that operates mirror adjustment (a and b),is stuck in position a- meaning i can only adjust the left drivers side mirror.thats about it. as it stands i can not open any of the windows from the driver door switch pack....although i can get some air in the car by using the front passenger side window toggle switch. same for two rear windows.
i believe/feel the switch pack is shot....even though i have some functionality....the four toggle switches which operate the windows/all windows...are not engaging and its like no electrical contact is being made. i would appreciate any feedback....as well as info on where i can pick up a switch pack....if i have diagnosed this right......much thanks.
The most common reason I have had to replace the switchpack is from getting water in them from window tinting. (they use water and a squeegee)
People would show up at the dealer after a window tinting and the windows had the same faults you are having. A good used switch will work if a new one is too pricey.
Remember to disconnect the battery when the switch is replaced to clear all the networks of messages from the failed switchpack or the right rear window will be the only one that operates.
my latest update on this is now....both rear windows can be raised and lowered from the driver door controls....i can also lower but not raise the front passenger window. it seems the two toggle switches operating both front windows is damaged.
i am going to wait a few days to see if full functionality comes back...no doubt its water damage. i am noticing for the toggle switch operating the driver side window the one that absolutely won't move, there is a clicking noise when i attempt to engage....no noise/sound when others are engaged. the lesson i learned in all this...is never, never leave the driver door window cracked open....actually any window....all the more painful as i usually cover the car when not in use.
Bob....looks like the fix for this is pretty simple if we are talking about a remove and replace with a part that has a modular connection/plug. i think the most challenging part of the job is removing the toggle switch pack without damaging the leather on the door handle.
i would appreciate a reputable aftermarket part supplier where i can get the part...any suggestions?once i take it out i would rather replace rather than try to dry it out.....i figure if driving the car with temp set at 80 degrees does not do the trick it probably is toasted.....while it has been going over 40 the last few days.....it freezes at night....interesting how only part of the pack is damaged/not working....thanks again to all.
The door panel needs to be removed and the switch accessed from inside.
Loosen the grab handle fasteners from the back side and remove the switchpack fasteners.
Swap out the veneer panel and reinstall.
Reconnect the battery or perform a 'hard reset' if you forgot to disconnect before swapping switch.
jim this is quite interesting.....there is no mention however, of having to remove the door panel... in what you sent .....as per bob g and eric,....even other jag diy videos......say the door panel must be removed/separated as well as the wood veneer oval attached to the door panel itself which is popped and slid to rear/left to remove. on mine there is a black oval cup behind the drivers side handle. there is a screw behind there which needs to be removed as well as a screw at the very bottom left corner of the arm rest itself.
maybe what you sent already assumes the door cover has been removed. either way i am grateful for the pictures.....i have ordered the driver side switchpack....if the door cover has to be removed to get to the switch pack.....will i be able to re-fit the cover with existing fasteners or will i need to get new fasteners? thanks again
