Default Keypad entry modification available?

Reposted due to incorrect posting in the X300 forum by error...

I have been driving Ford/Lincoln products a long time, and one thing I have become very accustomed to is the keypad that allows me to access the interior without keys or a fob. Whenever I play sports, go hiking, golf or whatever, I leave my keys in the car and play free of worry about losing my keys. I think it is just a great addition to any vehicle.

Ford has a unit that will retrofit vehicles without this feature by creating what is essentially the keyfob, but with a numeric keypad on it that is stuck to the outside of the vehicle. You have to train it. I thought I read somewhere that these Jags used Ford fobs, and if true, would this unit also work for our vehicles?

Does anything like this exist in the after marketfor the 308? If not, is there an aftermarket solution that could be wired in to the master unlock button?

Any help is appreciated. This seems like a small thing, but it is important in my universe.

Subscribed.

I too have driven Ford and Lincolns and love the keypad. Because I prefer not to have a key with ring and remote in my pockets I only carry the key on a swivel with a simple thin fob. I would really like to leave the key in the car and use a keypad to gain entry.

I don't know if it will work, but I think you may correct that our remotes are similar to the ford ones. Here is a link to the universal one you are talking about.

Here is a potential unit. I believe there may be others yet to be found, but this one definitely has promise. A bit pricey...

I have a wireless control for my LS. If my Jag can learn it, then the Ford wireless one is a go. I will try tomorrow if I have time. I have seen them cheaper than at the site listed by MidlifeXJR, but that looks like the one.

Still looking... they used to be all over ebay only a couple years ago, but they seem to have vanished.

I have nothing useful to add, but I saw a person use one of these keypads today on their vehicle and man was I impressed. very useful. I would definitely like one for the Jag.

I realize this is rather ironic, but can't the stick-on universal keypad be stolen off the vehicle?

Yes, they could be stolen. However, the adhesive is aggressive, the unit looks good enough to be OEM (and it comes with a paintable bezel should you wish to paint it your vehicle color), and I consider it highly unlikely anyone would attempt to remove it, as you need the code supplied with it to program it to your car.

Plus, on my Lincoln LS, I chose to put it just above the rear license plate, between the plate lights, out of the elements, and hidden from casual view. I did have to learn how to use it upside down, not a problem. Plus, the door looked cleaner without it. It can also be mounted to the door pillar.

I have been traveling, so have not had the opportunity to try programing it yet, but hope to post the results soon, perhaps by the weekend. I don't have a lot of confidence it will work.

Once everything else is worked out on my new 99 XJR, I will dive into this project in earnest. I intend to have this feature on my vehicle one way or another.

Got my keypad installed.

Wanted to put it on the boot, next to the license lights, but the metal was not smooth enough. I went with the door instead...

Got it off ebay for $40! I kept searching knowing I had seen this type thing befor, and it finally showed up.

It worked GREAT, does door and trunk. But it is working sparadocally now... The battery in the pad on the door is going. Turns out these are 10 year old units, and the battery is old. So next step is to replace a nonreplacable battery... I WILL PREVAIL!

Update for keypad project... everything works like it should, a wonderful addition to my cat. The negative was the battery was old in the transmitter, but with a couple flat blade jewelers screwdrivers and a three minutes, replaced the coin style battery no problem.

The performance with the unit on the door was not good. I believe it was because the receiver was directly shielded by the door itself. If I moved the transmitter away from the car, even 15-20 feet, it worked fine. It did not work reliably when mounted to the door. As you might imagine, this caused just a bit of frustration.

The solution was to mount the transmitter on the drivers door pillar, as shown in the photos below. It now works flawlessly, and I am confident to leave my keys in the car when playing sports, hiking, whatever. Plus, I think it looks good too, painted gold like the car. Total cost for this was less than $100, installed by a local shop.

This was the last detail to bring my cat up to my spec. I will update my stereo install soon, but it is completed and the car has proven to be a pure joy to drive.

I love my XJR!
