Lets start a fight and talk about oil
So, based on past epxeriences in other forums, this will soon devolve into either a shouting match or a hockey game, but what fun is life without a good ruckus now and then?
New to me 2001 XJR, AJ27 engine, newer than the car but I do not have the serial number off it so I don't know if that might change anything or not. I have not yet gotten to an oil change interval and I don't have the factory manual so I figured I'd come here and seek opinions and see if we can get some folks riled up about brand and weight of oil, filter and the all important oil change intervals people use.
I tend to defer to the factory recommended brand, weight and OCI, but am interested to hear opinions while seeking that info out. My motor seems in very good condition, had a valve cover off and I have all updated timing stuff (which led some of the more knowlegable Tech members to tell me no way its the original engine), very clean inside, did the gaskets on the right, have yet to do the ones on the left, but they do leak a bit, but do not drip. I have no smoke on cold starts, engine revs freely, pulls strong, etc. Like to keep it that way.
So what does everyone use for products, weight and oci here?

Actually we have all fought this battle -- many times -- on this forum. Last I remember, the recommendation was Valvoline fully synthetic 5w30 unless you had high mileage, then 5w40: this based on some chemical and stress testing done back in the 2013 time frame
Some guys like Mobil1 High Mileage better; some Germans like some special stuff too costly here in the Colonies. I have forgotten what the favorite was in the British Isles. Drivers Manuals can be downloaded from the stickies; also available on eBay. Calls for 5w30 unless super cold out.
But run a Google search (better than the internal search function here): see when the battles have been fought . . .

Thank you sir! Figured this has probably been beat to death just like every other forum, but new car brand to me, so it can't hurt to seek opinions...or at least try to start a good argument up.
Looking online I;m seeing recommendede OCI of 16k km, or about 10k miles, which is what I usually defer to on my vehicles with M1 oil and filter. Curious if there is a certain oil spec I should seek out, for example my 2004 Saab and 2012 VW both had mfr specs that drove me to use M1 0-w40 European Spec oil as it was what met both the weight and certification recommendations of the mfr.

Oil filters are mostly the same with minor difference. Pennzoil has never let me down.

I use Castrol Edge high mileage synthetic, either 5w-30 or 10w-40, and OEM filter number EAZ1354. I change oil (and rotate tires) every 5,000 miles because of the engine's high mileage and because I don't drive it often. I believe Jaguar used to specifically recommend Castrol oil, but I'm sure that any reputable oil and filter is more than adequate. Since I don't care to learn the nuances of different oil brands, I tend to stick pretty close to the manufacturer recommendation if possible.

Do you change viscosity based on seasonal temps or some other factor?
190,000. Engine internals have never been touched to my knowledge. I’ve done lots of other things including timing chains, but nothing internal.
I run Wix filters and Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W-30 (cheap @ Walmart) in these cars. From what I gather the factory fill was not synthetic so why bother. I'm sure we all change the oil well before recommended intervals anyway, no need for synthetic in my opinion but obviously not a bad thing to use it if you choose.
My wife's daily driver is a 2000 XJ8L at 153,000 miles so I use the 5W40.
My other XJ8s and one of my XKRs have 80,000 to 110,000 miles so I use 5W30 if it is Winter or just happen to have more of that in stock on my shelves.
The Anthracite XKR has 150,000 miles so it gets 5W40 'just because'.
