Default Lights on the steering wheel?

On the 2001 XJ8, is their supposed to be illumination of the controls on the steering wheel on either side of the airbag? (radio volume on left-cruise control on right)
Mine are dark and it seems awkward at night.
If there are lights, how do you replace them?
Thanks

Thank you for the prompt reply, Vector. Strikes me as odd, as even my same vintage Ford Rangers' are back lit. Oh, well, there's always the map light.

Yep, it is a common question posed by new owners.

Brits are known for their keen night vision, so they saw no need I guess. :-)

Plus we got a leaper instead of back lit steering wheel buttons.

Do not ever ask if the "Supercharged" script on the tach lights up on an "R" type though, lol!

Since they are all on the steering wheel, it would be
natural to presume that the driver is supposed to be
able to remember them and function by touch.

You just need more hours behind the wheel.

Default "Supercharged" - off at night

I've had two x308 XJR's - I always wondered why "Supercharged" wasn't made visible at night - has to be printed that way on purpose.

Absolutely.... as I'm yet to see illuminated signs on either gas pedals, or brake pedals.... not 100% sure about clutch pedals, as I haven't owned many stick cars, so far....

Cheers,

Someone with more candor than me explained it to an owner this way:

"The XJR is not a pinball machine........"
